Castle Drakensteyn, Lage Vuursche

I was wondering that too. Is it located within the grounds of a palace and who lives in front of it? It's gorgeous!

I believe it is indeed used for Security.

I love this castle but do wonder how big it is inside, how many rooms etc as it doesn't seem all that big compared to other royal residences. It must be a lovely retirement home for Beatrix.

She purchased it so she must have lived it. I also wonder how it looks in the inside and how many rooms!

Recent pictures of Drakensteyn are rare. Not so long ago wall hangings from Drakensteyn made in 1780 by Jurriaen Andriessen were restored and showed to the public in Van Loon House, where (then) Queen Beatrix' Grand Mastress Martine van Loon-Labouchère lives.

When Princess Beatrix bought Drakensteyn in the 1950's, these wall hangings were in so poor state, that they were rolled up on the attick. Now these have been restored and giving an idea of the original interior, in a set up by Van Loon House, to highlight the works of Jurriaen Andriessen:

There are still wallhangings of Jurriaen Andriessen in other salons of Drakensteyn:

:previous: The wall hangings are magnificent! How long would it have taken to make one of them?

I have often wondered myself how big Castle Drakensteyn is. The octagonal shape makes it hard to compare in size to other residences. But it seems to be built on four floors, so the overall floor space may be quite substantial.

Also, there are two other buildings separated from it, which may add to the over all size:

I've noticed the angle of many photos make the castle seem quite small, yet it this photo we see quite an impressive entrance hall:
