"Royal Wives At War" (2016) - BBC Two Telemovie on Queen Elizabeth and Wallis Simpson

Royal Wives At War
It is nearly 80 years since the Abdication Crisis, and this drama documentary, inspired by real events and based on letters, memoirs, biographies and interviews, examines the friction that characterised the relationship between two women: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and American socialite Wallis Simpson.

  • Royal Wives At War, due to be broadcast on Friday, drew critical comments
  • It documents the relationship between Queen Mother and Wallis Simpson

Why would QEQM be jealous for Wallis for marrying Edward?

By the Wallis married Edward, the Duchess of York was her Majesty the Queen. She and her husband had a grand celebration to mark their coronation, while three weeks later only a few people attended the wedding of Edward & Wallis.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon may have had a childhood/teenage crush on Prince Edward, Prince of Wales but fell in love with Prince Albert and she married him long before Edward met Wallis.

Edward was a dashing, popular Prince and probably a large portion of the the female population of GB fancied him but it was a 'celebrity' crush and not real affection. Once Elizabeth met Edward she probably got over her crush.

You are assuming a lot there. You might be right, of course, but there's no proof she did not carry a torch for David, and settled for Bertie because she wanted to be royal. That's reason enough to have it in for Wallis.

There's no evidence at all that Elizabeth was in love with the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) before, during or after her marriage. She was fond of him in a sister in law fashion and that was it, in my view.

Edward was still involved with the married Freda Dudley Ward in the early 1920's and all Society knew it. His plan to marry Rosemary Leveson-Gower had fallen on stony ground and IMO he didn't contemplate marrying anyone after that until Wallis came along. Why would a young, eligible woman want to involve herself in that mare's nest of a situation?

Elizabeth didn't care for Wallis for a multitude of reasons. The Royal family regarding her as an adventuress and the terrible strain of the Abdication aftermath are just two reasons.

In the Windsors' exile Wallis made fun of Elizabeth's weight and made various nasty remarks about her and her family which no doubt got back to BP. Why should Elizabeth like her? Of the two women I think the description angry, resentful, bitter, envious and jealous suits Wallis far more than the QM.

In every new film and TV drama there has to be a new hook. It's the same with this BBC production. That doesn't mean it's truthful, and IMO it isn't!

I really find it hard to believe also that Elizabeth was jealous of Wallis because she, herself, had a hankering for David. By all accounts, Albert proposed to Elizabeth three times before she accepted with the reason being that Elizabeth really didn't want to have a royal life (imagine if she had a glimmer of what the press/media is like today) but once married, she became the epitome of what a Queen Consort should be like in both times of war and peace and stood by her Bertie 100%.

At the time of the abdication, there was quite a few things about Wallis that deemed her "unsuitable" as a bride for a King and the abdication itself caused a constitutional crisis as it was. Elizabeth's relationship with her brother-in-law had absolutely nothing to do with her feelings towards Mrs. Simpson.
