Expressen writes that this was a journey that the climate-conscious king would have preferred to avoid.
The government plane flew from Arlanda to Bromma to pick up the royal couple on their way to Kiruna.
The task of state aviation is to transport Sweden's highest civilian and military leaders as well as the royal family. There are two planes to do that. On the final day of the German Federal President's state visit the trip went to Kiruna. A government plane was used for the trip and took off in the morning from Arlanda, where it is stationed. It didn't fly to the north, but first made the 40 km short trip to Bromma airport where the royal couple boarded.
The same extra trip was made later the same day when the plane returned to Stockholm. Then the royal couple was released at Bromma before the plane flew back to Arlanda. According to the Swedish Armed Forces' calculations, each extra landing with the government plane means a carbon dioxide emission of 822 kilos.
The King's commitment to environmental and climate issues is well known. How do two extra flights between Bromma and Arlanda suit to the court's climate policy?
Margareta Thorgren says that the decision to pick up the royal couple in Bromma was made by the First Marshal of the Court for reasons of time and logistics.
- There were a number of aspects that weighed in, for example, the royal couple is always on site before the guests during state visits. The government plane's home base was previously Bromma, but is now Arlanda, which means that when the Head of State uses the plane, he now flies from Arlanda.
It's about eight kilometers from Drottningholm Palace to Bromma, but over 40 km to Arlanda.
Thorgren says that there may be more pick-ups at Bromma, it can't be ruled out, but in the first place, the Royal Family uses regular flights and they constantly review travel to make it as climate-neutral as possible. The king and queen couldn't travel by train to Norrland, but Thorgren says that the Royal Family chooses the train as often as possible. And the pandemic taught them a lot about holding meetings digitally, it is something they will continue to avoid unnecessary travel.
In addition to the Swedish government plane, another plane went between Arlanda and Kiruna because the German delegation flew in its own, much larger plane.
- For security reasons, two heads of state never fly in the same plane, says Thorgren.
