That is indeed a historic tiara; it's the Oriental Circlet tiara and was made for Queen Victoria (and designed by Prince Albert). It originally contained opals, but Queen Alexandra thought they were unlucky and had them replaced with rubies when she became Queen and wanted to wear the tiara. I believe this tiara is one of the pieces of jewellery left by Victoria specifically for the use of future queens.
It's one of the two tiaras that the Queen Mother wore regularly since being widowed; since the Queen Mother's death, the Queen has worn it at least once.

Queen Mother's ruby brooches
I am very keen to have photos of the QM's ruby brooches. Please only the rubies.
She was given a gift, in Australlia, about 1972, of a stylised hibiscus brooch with Burmese rubies and diamonds.
I have read the description, but never seen a picture. If anyone has, I would be delighted to know and to see it.
She, of coarse, has the pair of R&D from Mrs. Greville.

As Duchess of York, she wore a diamond rose tiara that was a gift from her parents. She later acquired a scroll diamond tiara and a papyrus fan diamond tiara. The Queen was given the scroll tiara and Princess Margaret was given the papyrus fan tiara.
Once Elizabeth became Queen Consort, she selected Victoria's Oriental Ruby & Diamond Tiara and the George III Fringe Diamond Tiara from the Crown Collection. After the death of Lady Greville, she inherited the Boucheron Diamond Honeycomb Tiara, which she later augmented with additional diamonds made into arches by Cartier. This became her primary tiara until her death, but she also wore the Oriental Ruby one with her ruby parure.
All of The Queen Mother's jewels were left to The Queen after her death. The crown pieces can only be worn by a reigning Queen or Queen Consort, but the others belong to The Queen's personal collection. She gave Camilla the Honeycomb diamond tiara and Queen Mary's Delhi Durbar tiara for her personal use.

Did QE actually give Camilla the tiara? I thought the Queen loaned it.
