Vermudo I of Asturias, called the Deacon (c. 750-Oviedo, 797), King of Asturias from 789 to 791, was the son of Fruela de Cantabria.
Bermudo I is the ancestor crowned as the most remote king of a lineage that connects generation after generation until Felipe VI, current king of Spain. Given this, authors such as García-Mercadal and García-Loygorri consider that the reigning dynasty in Spain is the second oldest in the world, only behind the Japanese.
