So only the first wife of the sheikh is "sheikha"(sp), is that right?

First, second third and fourth wife can be "a sheikha" but only when Married and its been announced. Its usually not given when the sheikh marry's in a very low ceremony or without anyones knowledge (something like a secret marriage).

Most of the spouses of sheikhs in the Gulf region or Saudi princes for example are sheikhas or princesses because they were members of the same royal or princely families as their husbands and got the title by birth (marrying later a more or less distant cousin like Sheikha Hind). Of course, a ruler can confer such a title to a wife if he wants to honor her this way. Lalla Salma was the first wife of a Maroccan king to be bestowed with the title of a princess (not queen). But why should a royal princess like Haya want to become a lower-ranking sheikha?

The Hashemites are following special rules – more familiar to Westeners: in Jordan the wife of the prince becomes a princess of Jordan and her royal highness and takes on the name of her husband: PP Alia al-Faisal, Reem Ali, Noor Hamzah etc. and, of course, Queen Rania al-Abdullah or Noor al-Hussein. But this is the exception in the Arab world – as well as the title queen for the consort of a king.
Thank you for the information. I have read this thread with interest. It amazes me the debate that PH's marriage to SheikhMo brings to these forums - either people approve or they don't.

Princess outranks both Sheikh and Sheikha. Shk & Shka are for "Ruling" families whereas Princess and Prince are for "Royal" families.

Also, Haya is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, huge plus compared to any Shk. or Shka.
