The leader of the extreme right/fascist party, Geert Wilders, was the one who proposed in parlament who suggested in the 2nd chamber that the royals would have to cut back 20%. He was supported by the socialist party, the greens, Rita Verdonk and the party for the animals (sigh!). Femke Halsema, leader of the green party, also wants the RF to pay tax over their income and inhertitances (which is not unreasonable IMHO).

AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN " party for the animals (sigh!)"!!!!!
Guess who is a member of it. .
anyway, I thought it was a unclear whether the Royals pay incometax and now I read that they do not. It would be better PR, better anything if they had accepted to live a bit less extravagant. They sound like a well run company, if your profits are the same as last year you have an essential loss...

Maxima's dress wasn't to my taste at all, it also accentuated her hips, she usually looks so slim and trim, yet here she looked somewhat broad. Her makeup and hair were to perfection.

Say that again Jack!...
Here's how our national embarrasment discussed some issues, but all were
put down/ignored by the PM:
Quote:
Dutch royals attacked by parliament
Why subsidize the royal hunt? Why pay for maintenance of the royal yacht? Isn't it right to cut the royal income? And shouldn't Prince Willem-Alexander abandon his plans for a holiday home in Mozambique? Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende was bombarded with questions and suggestions on Wednesday and Thursday as parliament discussed the government's budget proposals for 2010.

Oh dear.... well, at least it isnt Verdonk or the PVV (who deserve other terms than just a sigh ).
---
Apparently the PM did not want to discuss cutting in the costs of the monarchy because it would not be 'fair', considering the new financial statute for the royal house was just implemented this year. He also stated that the salaries of the queen, prince of Orange and princess Máxima will rise with the same % as ALL the salaries of the state. So if they decide to freeze the salaries of all employees, the salaries of the royals will also be frozen.

Wait, is there something in the Netherlands that's actually called the "party for the animals," or has it just earned that nickname because it' s particularly concerned with animal welfare, endangered species, etc.?

yes, there is a party that is particularly concerned with animal welfare (and I am a member) they were one of the parties engaged in the discussion of the budget that the hunting done by the dutch royal family is subsidised with (can not remember) quite a lot of money.

Could we please try to stay a little closer to the threads topic, and carry out any further discussion about Dutch political parties via PM?!
Thanks,

I have no idea if I am posting this in the right thread... but someone can put it in the right place if I’m wrong for sure.
Did other people here saw HRH Princess Margriet running (or perhaps tripping for an instant and then forced to practicly run) towards HM the Queen, who was already waving to the people assembled before the gates of the Noordeinde Palace, during the closing balcony scene after the opening of parliament, a.k.a 'Prinsjesdag'?? She seemed to make fun out of it.. almost jumping as a small child once she had reached the Queen..
Before the sprint of the princess started the Queen was actually looking back over her shoulder to the Princess and her husband, sort of asking them to appear on the balcony, I think HM does it like that all the time, but the moment seemed to last a bit longer than normal, as if something strange was happening..
(There were some other strange things happening this 'Prinsjesdag' but this is not the place for that i guess...)
Maybe Margriet is enjoying a second youth???

You can see that on some of the Prinsjesdag youtube videos - about 7:06 on this one here:
It's very cute; she looks delighted with the whole occasion. I think what happens is the Queen looks back once, and then looks back again, as though to imply that the little sister's lagging behind, not moving fast enough, or something, and then Margriet sort of bounces out there, all smiles.

I think i saw a close up of the balcony when this happened during the live broadcasting... not this shot from far away.. you could see it more clear.. although this video is also very funny:-)

HM and TRH the PoO and Princess Máxima wear the Order of the Lion of The Netherlands, the Order was automatically bestowed on the Heir, and on his spouse.Princess Laurentien is wearing the Order of Orange Nassau.
She ,like Pieter van Vollenhoven had to,will have to accomplish quiet a deal and render her services to the House before she will be bestowed with the highest Order.Pieter had to wait untill a few years ago before he was bestowed with the Order of the Lion of The Netherlands. And it came as a huge surprise to him when it did,an acknowledgement for what he stands for and what he has done over the decades.
So,in short, all children of the Monarch,(and the spouse of the Heir),are automatically bestowed with the Order of the Lion once they turn 18,
all others have to work for it and have to fancy the House Order till then.

Parliament is debating the costs of the monarchy again today. The Socialist Party will ask if the royal family can't pay for their own private trips and stop using the government airplane for them.
The prime minister will 'defend' the budget of the RF today.
