They seem on track to break the record for the fastest time to gain one million followers on instagram. The current record is 11 hrs 36 min, held by Kang Daniel of Korea.

I see it as another step in the direction of the Sussexes forging their own social media identity, separate from the Cambridges.
Although it will trigger the usual rumors about a strained relationship between William/Catherine and Harry/Meghan, it is an expected development as the two brothers are now adults, with their own families and different roles within "the Firm".

It makes sense to get the couples to have their own social media accounts now they're their own family units. Even here on TRF they have their own family boards, so it seems like a sensible decision to have separate Instagram and Twitter accounts. Saves for less clutter, but people always like gossip.

And they've now surpassed a million.
I think one really positive aspect of this is that it has the capacity (if things keep going the way they are) to demonstrate that royal followers are a lot less divided than some people might claim. There are a few very loud voices - on both sides - proclaiming that "everyone" loves their favoured couple and only a few fanatics actually likes the other. I've seen a lot of predictions that when Harry and Meghan had their own social media, everyone would abandon KP because they think everyone's like them and can't stand W&K. There have also been dire predictions that no-one would follow H&M because *those* people think everyone's like them and can't stand H&M.
Basically, there have been a few people screaming their heads off on either side, with some unknown number of people in the middle.
Well, now we'll have a better idea of how many people are in that "yeah, I like both of them" camp. And early indications are pretty good.
SussexRoyal is already at 1.1 million since I've been writing this post. And Kensington Palace's IG is up 37K followers in the last 4 hours, probably because more people realized it was there due to the news coverage.
In short, a rising tide lifts all boats. And the tiny minority of people on either side screaming their heads off that you have to choose one or the other can go pound sand.

They are at 1.4M now. They hardly slowing down and will probably hit 2M in the next hours. Good for them. Smart to launch this ahead of the baby’s arrival.

It's been quite the deal ..IG had to cap how many follow requests per hour were allowed so it wouldn't crash the whole server! So for some folks it took several tries before the follow button would work ..I was one of them!

Before my day got busy, I did try and access the website and it was crashed and out of service both times. Now I'm reading how its growing by leaps and bounds and garnering more and more followers. I'll just have to keep trying I guess. I'm not overly big on social media that much but the royal websites are an excellent source of information.
This is all wonderful for the "Firm" itself. Although I can imagine that there'll be rumors bouncing all around the place of the "split" between two brothers, I see it as each couple coming into their maturity in their roles within the "Firm" with each having his own path to follow but with each path being an essential part of the "Firm" serving the people. It happens too that perhaps a person may really like and follow one individual royal but, over time, come to realize the importance and value of each member of the BRF and the monarchy as a whole.
This whole split of households and having individual social media accounts, to me, shows that there is a need for it. The "Firm" is growing and changing and spreading in our global society and its the people and the organizations and charities the royals serve that actually are going to benefit the most. Just look at what's happened with #GlobalSussexBabyShower.

I followed them. The pictures they’ve posted are most likely indicative of what we will see in the future.

I've not seen the pictures yet but I imagine that with having this resource for pictures of the family, they'll be more in control of the content and, like we've seen the Cambridges do, skip the media outlets in releasing pictures of Baby Sussex in the future.
