Queen Juliana's Family at Soestdijk

Historian Annejet van Zijl wrote a book called 'The American Princess' about Allene Tew, godmother of Pss Beatrix and 'aunt' of Prince Bernhard.

In the book is an anecdote about Princesses Beatrix and Irene who got arrested by the police when they & a few school collegues went into a grocery shop and stole a few pieces of fruit. The police called the palace to tell that the princesses were at the police station with the others. When Juliana asked about the punishment the policeman informed her that the children would be in a cell for two hours. Juliana responded: 'Fine, you can keep my daughters one hour extra because they are supposed to be a role model for others'.

^^^A wise decision by Juliana to have her daughters held accountable and then an extra hour imposed. Sadly there are parents who would have demanded that their child receive no consequence for stealing.

That book about Countess Paul de Kotzebue née Allene Tew formerly Mrs Theodore R. Hostetter, formerly Mrs Morton Colton Nichols, formerly Mrs Anson Wood Burchard, formerly Princess Heinrich XXXIII Reuss zu Köstritz looks a fascinating one to me....

Her first husband was President of the Hostetter Company.
Her second husband was a New York City banker.
Her third husband was Chairman of General Electric.
Her fourth husband was Nr 1 in the line of Dutch succession would Queen Wilhelmina remain childless.
Her fifth husband was a fortuned Russian noble and Tsarist army Captain in exile.

It seems AnneJet van der Zijl became intrigued by "Tante Allene" when she wrote her biography on Prince Bernhard.

The Countess de Kotzebue was one of Princess Beatrix' godparents. See picture.
The five godparents on the first row are:
- Adolf Friedrich, the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (brother-in-law of Queen Wilhelmina)
- Prince Alice, Countess of Athlone (cousine of Queen Wilhelmina)
- King Leopold III of the Belgians
- Princess Elizabeth, the Fürstin zu Erbach-Schönberg (aunt of Queen Wilhelmina)
- Allene, Countess Paul de Kotzebue ("aunt" of Prince Bernhard)
