Technically, there is no need for him to stay in Madrid since he has no part in the formation of a government once a candidate is officially designated (Rajoy) and until, after he's voted at the Congress, he need to swear the charge in front of the King (Felipe could go away and return back for the swearing).
But for PR reasons it makes all the sense. It wouldn't look good if the King would go away on holidays while the situation is so unclear. Simple as that.
