QUEEN'S EMAIL MAD
Aug 10 2003
By Stephen Martin And Alan Rimmer
THE Queen is hooked on sending emails to Prince William while he is on a tour of Africa.
And unlike Prince Charles, who pompously dictates emails for his secretary to send, the Queen, 77, types them herself.
In the last fortnight she has been sending emails to William on his travels, and to Harry, who has been enjoying the summer social whirl of polo parties at home.
The monarch was introduced to the joys of going online by Prince Andrew, who bought her her first mobile phone two years ago. He has shown his mother how to send and receive emails and how to forward them to friends and family. Following her lead, even the notoriously anti-modern Prince Philip, 82, has signed up for email too.
A Palace source said: "They think it is amazing that they can communicate at the click of a button. The Queen does a lot of it herself and so does Prince Philip.
"The Queen is not a very fast typist - but she is getting quicker. Apparently she was very impressed that George Bush senior was sending emails, so she asked how it was done."
The monarch is using email only for personal matters, including talking to her horse racing contacts. Official business is still done by letter.
The Queen has beaten Tony Blair, famous for being computer illiterate, to getting online. Next month the PM will unveil an email address for the public to write to him about Government performance.
