I would like to know what may happen if no Prime Minister is voted in. Is it true that the Queen may have to step in ? And if so what can she possibly do? I thought this was a Democratic system now.
The Queen is limited in her role as a constitutional monarch to advice from her sitting Prime Minister. Until the readings in the Commons are taken and a coalition government is formed, Gordon Brown has the right to remain Prime Minister until a vote of no-confidence is passed.
At that point, Brown would ask for an audience with The Queen and formally hand in his seal of office. The Private Secretaries would have already taken advice from the other party leaders to determine if they agree on a Prime Minister. At that point, The Queen would offer the office to the new candidate.
Hung parliaments don't usually last long in the UK and a new election may be called within a year if legislation cannot pass. At that point, the Prime Minister asks The Queen to dissolve Parliament and hold a new election.
