Summary of article in Billed Bladet #35, 2016.
Written by our Arctic reporter, Marianne Singer.
In the first photo in the article we see Mary wear seal-skin and wool from Greenland, designed by Jesper Høvring - for Greenlandic export.
And this is what she wore for the dinner in the evening of her first day in the Hans Egede House in the capital of Nuuk.
She had touched down in Nuuk in the forenoon and in the late afternoon she visited the crisis center in Nuuk. Unfortunately domestic and social issues is a very real problem in Greenland, so the crisis centers are alas not empty.
Tuesday she attended a conference with people from all over Greenland: Violence at Home.
62 % of all Greenlandic women have in some point in their lives been subjected to abuse/violence. (IIRC the DK numbers 20-25 %) And it's very much an issue you don't talk about.
BB has deadline at noon Tuesday and this is where the account ends.
Mary wore a necklace depicting polar bears, and they were presented to her on a previous visit to Greenland.
On Monday Mary started out by visiting the integrated institution (nursery/kindergarten/school combined) Sikkersoq
And here she was met with no less than three flower-children dressed in their finest. Aged 2-4, the children were a bit overwhelmed by all the commotion and the photographers blitzing away, getting photos of the irresistible motives the children were.
Mary chatted a bit with them and said afterwards: "It's always a pleasure to meet the Greenlandic children. They are a bit quiet and shy when you first meet them, but then, bit by bit, they open up". (*)
But with a town of some 16.000 all children in Nuuk were mobilized, also from other kindergartens. So Mary went over to say hi to those children as well.
Well, inside Mary was presented to the Greenlandic version of the Free from Bullying concept, and that includes a "by a good buddy-song" in Greenlandic.
Mary responded with a: "You were so good - a thousand thanks".
Greenland, has in contrast to DK, implemented free from bullying in all municipal schools and kindergarten. (In DK all schools are obliged to implement some kind of anti-bullying concept and that is not necessarily the one advocated by the Mary Foundation).
And Mary noticed that the concept is now a well-anchored part of Greenlandic schools and kindergartens.
The well-being of children and them having a good start at school and kindergarten in regards to their mates is crucial, said Mary.
Then she visited the crisis center and posed for selfies. Mary last visited the center in 2009.
The conference had not ended by BB's deadline.
(*) Greenland has a charming tradition. On the first day at school the children from families who can afford it dress up in their national costumes, if not they dress up in their finest.
That in contrast to DK, where children are dressed much more casual. As you may recall from Christian and Isabella's first days at school.
