I think its the basic little black dress with a variation that you can't go wrong with for evening wear.
 
I really liked the coat she was wearing. I thought it was super cute. Not feeling the black lace dress though.

Thank you for saying it. Kate will not catch a cold or flu by going without a coat for a few minutes. Her biggest risk for getting sick would be shaking hands/coming into contact with someone that is sick. That's why washing your hands is so important during the cold/flu season.

I love the coat but, the color and the details. The black dress seemed extremely. Boring and would have been much improved with hair up. Lovely to see her dimples back with just a tiny bit more weight on, wish she kept it as she really looks so pretty, not drawn looking.
As far as outside, yes it was very cold in ny last night but going from a heated open entryway as most upscale ny hotels have, to a waiting car, maybe ten steps, doesn't really count as being outside. I remember when they auctioned off grand dame Brooke Astor's clothes, she had no overcoats as she lived this life.

Overall, Catherine's outfits in New York have been great so far. That shade of purple on her Seraphine coat looks lovely on her. I'm not a fan of the black lines though.

I don't think Catherine's latest coat is too short at all. It seems to be just the right length for me.

Some complain the coatdress is too short, I complain that it's TOO DARK. She's young, she's visiting children, it's winter. Is a spot of color too much to ask for?
 
:previous:No not all, how about a nice deep red coat and a scarf with a NY design of red, black and white with black gloves to match..
 
First, I would have loved a colored coat, maybe red or green for the Christmas season, the black is too severe for a visit to a children's home. Second, I think the coat is too short.
 
Yes it's short, but I like it - particularly the light collar and pockets.

I like all the outfits that Kate has worn in the US so far, with today's black coat being my favorite so far. The cut looks great on her, and I love the white collar and cuffs.

I think Catherine looks very chic in the black coat today! The quality of photos has not been very good so far. Nonetheless, thanks to everyone who has posted pictures.
 
Uhm the coat is nice but it makes her look juvenile and like a schoolgirl... Too much balck indeed

I like the black coat the most but I'm a bit biased since my closet is full of black. I'm not a fan of the lace dress though. Hate lace and tired of it.

The VAST majority of [thin] NewYork women were wearing black when I was last there... it seemed to be almost a uniform for them.. [and it looked GREAT].

The length seems elegant to me. Perhaps it seems short because she's raising her arms in the one picture
 
The coat was well styled on the photos presented by the fashion label. However, the coat is not elegant in reality. The strap in the back is an unnecessary extra.

One of her worst choices, especially since it is her big visit in the USA. What a stupid, that is the word that kept coming to mind, dress. Black and white for children? Who cares if the entire staff or all of ny wears black, why should she? A huge miss, except her hair,
