but what dresses could work on a royal event
and do you think that royal at such gala evenst should wear dresses that are not so long´
Like Uma Thurman at the Oscars 2004
i do not think so royal gala even´ts should be with lomg dresses down to the floor
Charlize Theron dress i do not think it could work on a state visit and be worn by a princess or queen what do you think

I agree Josefine-Charlize Theron's dress is a little too...daring, to work for a Royal at an official event.
However I think Jennifer Garner's dress (Rustic orange color) would be beautiful for one of the Royal women who is more apt to experiment with color (Martha Louise perhaps, or maybe even Letizia as I think the color would look splendid on her!Ooh...or Mathilde!) Sandra Bullocks dress (White feathery bottom) would work for a winter gala event with a beautiful long White or black type coat. (I could picture Mette-Marit or even Maxima in a dress such as this. I think Victoria would look great in it as well!) Catherine-Zeta Jones (Red) is a pretty dress and might work for Royals if they could find some sort of wrap or shawl to where with it.
I absolutely detest Uma Thurmans dress...and I don't think there is any woman alive that could actually pull of wearing the dress, so I really don't think any of the Royals could.

Frankly, in my very, very humble opinion :), none of the dresses are quite right for a royal event. I think that actresses dress to attract attention or to shock. Mostly their trying to promote themselves for future movie roles or bigger movie roles, or to beef up their star appeal or attract interest for a movie role.
For a royal event, one has to be so careful as to not to:
(1) offend anyone with your apparel
(2) appear as you're trying to detract attention from the event
(3) look like a trollop
(4) be overdressed for the event
(5) be underdressed for the event
(6) wear too much bling bling :)

Mgrant-generally I would agree with you. Celebrity fashion has no room in the Royal world. Celebs to tend to dress flashy so as to be noticed at the big events where other celebs are dressed just as flashy. However there are some celebrity's who dress more classic and less flashy. The dresses I used as examples aren't flashy and the jewelry worn with such outfits doesn't have to be over done, but simple and understated, making the look more Royal and less "celeb."
I think, had the looks not been seen on a famous face, but instead on a simple "dummy" then they would be more readily acceptable by the royal fashion critics. We already have a look set in our heads now though and so it is hard to view it in the Royal setting...

Being royals limits your range of 'sexiness' the dresses are pretty much conservative half the time...if they try something daring they'll be criticized...

I think any of the dresses you selected from the various official Royal "formal" events would work well at the Oscars, although I myself would detest anyone who shows up in a dress like Caroline's as I can't stand it. Many of the dresses the Royals wear are meant to grab attention as well, so I don't really see much difference in when a Royal dresses and when a Celeb dresses other then the "daring" issue. Royals have to be much more careful in selecting a formal, as they don't want to look dowdy but they can't portray a sexpot image either (case in point: the Madeleine red Nobel Dress) While the dress looked great on her, she caught a lot of slack from Royal followers for showing to much.
I think most people equate looking regal with leaving a little something to the imagination. Maybe that's a problem. Young Royals should be allowed to wear what they like too, should they not? The older Royals tend to go for formals and clothing that are more covering, simply because as you get older that is a more sensible style. But if you look at the fashions popular with todays youth, the younger Royals are in a tough place...many of the fashions they can't immulate or try because they would be blasted by the media and the conservative Royal followers. I'm not saying I want to see Princess Beatrice or Princess Eugenie (etc. etc. etc.) out there wearing barely there tops and little to no skirts, but getting them out of the boxy, boring outfits they tend to wear at official functions (as all young royals do!) would be nice. Madeleine's dress at last year's Nobel was absolutetly gorgeous, but it was so matronly, and in my opinion something much too old for someone of a mere 21 years of age to wear. She looked beautiful, but old. The red dress suited her age and the trends of the year much much more!
Now finally-HATS! I love hats, I wear them whenever I get the chance or find an excuse to...I don't think it's old fashioned, but I do think it's very "elite class." Most people don't wear hats at even Easter, but the "elite" class tends to wear them to many social events. I, personally, hope they don't stop wearing them, as I rather enjoy seeing the different looks and trends. Maybe one day it will be picked up by the legions of others! (I'm talking hats like we see most of the royals wear, not hats like baseball caps etc.)

Royal vs. Oscar Style
I agree with Britters. Most (though not all) star actresses rely on sex appeal as part (to a greater or lesser degree) of what qualifies them for fame and fortune. Royals don't need to so they can be discrete and go for elegance and taste. If they have the figure or face, they need to show it to some extent. Crown Princess Victoria dresses down a bit too much. She'd be sensational with a whisper more of make up.
Charlize Theron's 2004 Oscar gown is way over the top for royals, even Princess Madeleine. Jennifer Garner's is what I could see royals wearing — and she looks comfortable in it :) . Naomi's and Renee's are a bit too decollete and slinky as are Scarlett's and Nicole's and some of those stars don't look very comfortable in those dresses either. Kelly Lynch's bouffant gown is gorgeous :o and a royal would do well in it with a matching wrap for discretion.
Royals do need to look comfortable when dressing up and their dresses need to fit. Many actresses on the red carpets do look awkward and sometimes the dresses look awkward on them. Royals really can't afford to be awkward or look awkward because we're supposed to look up to them as role models in matters of style and taste.

Yes, perhaps. But many royal watchers would be disappointed if they didn´t get a chance to see the Queen all dressed up and without some of the well-admired jewels of the SRF.
