The Coronation of King Rama X

Thanks. So, who hold the 3rd and 4th departments? The two princess daughters? And what about the remaining princess relatives?

Nobody, there are 5 levels of department possible, doesn't mean that there can be only five of them, decades ago there were dozens of princes and princesses with department belong to them; however, as I said, the department is just honorific now, there aren't any real corvee given to them

So, could he appoint one of his daughters as his heir? Or is it restricted to males? Could it also be someone outside of the family if it needs to be a man and the only available prince would be deemed unsuitable

1924 Palace Law of Succession forbade king to appoint woman to be heir, but article 21 of Thai constitution allow the privy council to nominate the late monarch's daughter if he hasn't appoint an heir before passed away. It's the privy council and parliament that can choose woman; if the king hasn't name an heir before; the king however, can't name woman to be successor.

However, the 1924 Palace Law of Succession can be amend if the king choose to. So, in effect, the king can name a woman as heir, just that the the Law of Succession has to be amend first.

Exactly yes, woman can still inherite the throne through privy council and parliament but not by the King’s designation. Thank you Jeannedeorleans for explanations.

I don't think I understand the department part yet. So, currently there are only three princesses with a department (on levels 1 (sister), 2 (other sister) and 5 (first former wife)? The other 4 princess do not have a department (level)?

What is most likely to happen in the coming years according to the Thai people/sources? Or is that something nobody is talking about as it might be perceived as criticism?

That's correct.

Prince Dipangkorn will be made crown prince when he is 20, it's that plain and simple.

Umbrellas

Now that Rana X is crowned he is automatically entitled to nine levels of umbrella. Is the new Queen automatically entitled to seven levels of umbrella or is that something that has to be conferred on her by her husband?

But whio would succeed if something happens to the King before he has appointed a Crown Prince? Who then decides who will become King?

Their Majesties the King and Queen, alongside with other members of the royal family, appeared on the balcony of the Grand Palace as Coronation draws to a close:

The privy council would submit a name of successor in accordance to Law of Succession to parliament for approval; in which Prince Dipangkorn is the first in line to the throne.

The four sons of the King Rama give their wishes for the coronation of their father:

"Long live the King Rama X on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s coronation.

With continued loyalty and utmost respect, from your sons,

ขอพระองค์ทรงพระเจริญ

ด้วยเกล้าด้วยกระหม่อมขอเดชะ

จุฑาวัชร วัชเรศร. จักรีวัชร วัชรวี"

Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse with his younger brother Dr. Chakriwat Vivacharawongse took a photo with the portrait of their father King Rama at Wat Nawamintararachutis Temple in Raynham, Massachusetts, United States of America.
The photo is from 2018.

It amazes me: their father and family rejected them.
