Prince Hans Adam II and Queen Elizabeth II are seventh cousins once removed. They are descendants of Prince Johan Willem Friso of Nassau-Dietz, Prince of Orange (1686-1711). These are the lines of descent:

• Johan Willem Friso > Charlotta Amalia > Karl Friedrich of Baden > Karl Ludwig > Karoline > Sophie of Bavaria > Karl Ludwig of Austria > Elisabeth > Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein > Hans Adam II

• Johan Willem Friso > Willem IV > Caroline > Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg > Alexander of Württemberg > Franz of Teck > Queen Mary > George VI > Elizabeth II.

Could someone explain the relation of "once, twice, etc., removed". I've never understood the term(s). What does it mean?

Prince Hans Adam II and Queen Elizabeth II are seventh cousins once removed.

Prince Hans Adam II and Queen Elizabeth II are seventh cousins once removed.

It gets complicated, but those two lines of descent make it easier. Charlotta Amalia and Willem IV were brother and sister. Their children, Karl Friedrich of Baden and Caroline are first cousins. Count down the generations from there. A simpler way of looking at it is to say they are very distantly related.

Thanks Warren. That works for me. My mom said that the removed term has to do with being related but of different generations. The room got hazy after that so I'll stick with your explanation of being distant relatives.

Did anyone take notice of the Liechtenstein family not being on the billionaire list? Take a peek if you get a chance.

As far as I know they have taken a back seat somewhat on "spotlight" regarding money situations. So I think that Warren is right regarding them not being on the list.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I for one wouldn't want my personal net worth published for all to see. I know that some extremely rich families have been the target of kidnappings throughout the world, especially from poor and destitute countries.

Also, it sends another message...none of your business.

I admire them for being private too but I'm salivating at mouth wanting some news, any news. Especially of our most famous and elusive couple, Max and Angela.

I've often said kudos to them for their privacy but every now and then they should accommodate us by giving us a little peek or tidbit into their world.

Yeah, if only it was that simple.

Princess Marie and Prince Hans Adam always look so happy, I can't say the same for Prince Alois and Prince Sophie, is it because they are just more reserved than Princess Marie and Prince Hans Adam? Wow, Alfons is only four?! He's really big for his age. The other children are also very adorable! I love those shots of Marie with her grandsons. Is that Moritz and Georg or Nikolaus, or Lukas von Lattorf?

BTW, could Prince Joseph Wenzel marry any woman he wanted, provided she is Catholic, or is there still a law in place that says the heir has to marry other royal? His choices are a little limited among the still-reigning, since Catholic Belgium has changed its laws, otherwise he and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium could get married (hey, I can dream, can't I ^_^) There's also Leonor, if baby #2 is a boy and they don't change the constitution, or if one of the Dutch girls converts. Of course, there are always the families no longer reigning, and he could marry into those, like his father did. Just curious, if Joseph Wenzel's choice for a bride is more open, as his uncles married commoners, but his father married into royalty. Was that Alois' choice, or was he required to find a royal bride by law?

The House Laws or constitution of the Princely House of Liechtenstein do not specify who the Reigning Prince or Hereditary Prince (or any other prince or princess) should marry. However, the Preamble states "These century-old traditions [of the Liechtenstein family] include the Catholic faith...".

Article 7 deals with marriage and states the Reigning Prince must give his consent (part 1); members of the family have the right to object, and the Reigning Prince shall give a ruling on the objection (part 2). If it is the Reigning Prince who seeks approval to marry, the Family Council will exercise these rights and duties (part 6).

The Family Council consists of three members and three substitutes elected by, and from, the members of the Princely House for a period of 5 years. The Reigning Prince is not a member of the Family Council. (Article 10, parts 1 and 2).
