[1]Imperial Palace1888-1945(Meiji Palace)

This wooden palace was buit in 1888.
Outside was Japanese style,and interior was Western style.
And,this palace was very splendid,but it was burned by air raid at May 15, 1945.

[2]Temporary Imperial Palace(1952-1968)

Meiji Palace was burned,
so the third floor of the Imperial Household Agency Government building
was rebuilt, and the Temporary Imperial Palace was built.

This building was built in 1935 and is still used as the Imperial Household Agency Government building .

[3]Imperian Palace(1968-)

Completed in October 1968 and coming into use in April of the following year,
the Imperial Palace, a structure comprising a large roof, pillars and beams,
was built using the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture and
materials procured mostly from within Japan.
The Palace is a steel-framed two story building with an underground floor
and an inclined roof with long protruding eaves.
It comprises the Seiden (the Main Building), and six wings (Homei-Den, Rensui, Chowa-Den, Chigusa-no-Ma and Chidori-no-Ma and others) and has a total floor space of 22,949 square meters.

This palace is a official palace.
Emperor doesn't live in this palace.

Naka-Mon(Inner Gate)


(1)Chowa-den

In the Imperial Palace, this building is
biggest building and is 162m in length.
The general public's congratulatory visit to the Imperial Palace
is performed in the balcony of this building,
and the front yard(East Plaza) twice a year.

This building is used for receptions, evening parties, waiting rooms, etc.,
and is constituted "Minami-damari(South Lobby)" , "Nami-no-Ma(Hall of Waves)",
"Matsukaze-no-Ma(Hall of Wind In Pine)",
"Shunju-no-Ma(Hall of Spring and Autumn)","Shakkyo-no-Ma(Hall of Lion Dance)",
"Kita-no-Ma(Hall of Winter"and"Kita-damari(North lobby)"

1, Minami-damari(South Lobby)

This lobby is located in the place containing the "Southern Vehicle Entrance"
This room has an area of 528 square meters.
The place with a mural painting which is visible to the direction
in the inner part of the second floor is "Nami-no-Ma(Hall of Waves)"

2, Nami-no-Ma


This room is situated on the mezzanine of Minami-Damari,
and the mural of 14.3 meters wide and 3.8 meters high
was drawn by Kaii Higashiyama(1908-1999),
a very well-known artist of Japanese paintings.
This room has an area of 248 square meters.

3, Matsukaze-no-Ma(Hall of Wind In Pine)

The name of this room is derived from the pattern of wallpaper.
This room has an area of 182 square meters.

4, Shunju-no-Ma(Hall of Spring and Autumn)

This hall has an area of 608 square meters,
and is the second largest hall in The Imperial Palace.
This hall is used for receptions, ceremonies, etc.
Five sets of the chandeliers made from crystal glass are attached to the ceiling.

This hall has an area of 245 square meters,
and is used for press conferences etc.
The name of this room is derived from the picture in this room.
The name of the picture is "Shakkyo".
("Shakkyo" is the picture which the lion is dancing.)

Kita-Kurumayose(Northern Vehicle Entrance)

This entrance is located in the north of Chowa-Den and used most frequently,
and communicates with "Kita-Damari".
The tower which is visible to the right is "Matsu-n0-tou(Lighting Tower)"

Naka-Kurumayose(Subterranean Entrance)

This entrance is located above the basement parking lot of Chowa-Den.
There is a shining wall made of glass blocks in order to let the light in.
The Japanese name of shining wall is "O-yashima".
This is a way of calling with old "Japan."
