The Extended Bernadotte Family, News Part 1: March 2017 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Countess Monica Bonde (the daughter of count Carl Johan Bernadotte af Wisborg) hosted a dinner to her friends at Svensk Damtidning's serie.
Monica tells that when she was a child, neither she or her brother Christian were allowed to go to the kitchen. The housemaids took care of cooking and of the household. Only when Monica got married and got children she really started to cook more. She has made simple food, her children have eaten a lot of panncakes and macaroni, and casseroles. Monica worked 27 years for Svensk Damtidning. She tells that she was raised at a home where order was important. Monica says that her father could not even cook an egg, but he was extremely careful about the food. They had always mealtimes and then the table was set fine with inherited porslin and napkins in napkin rings. They got to learn an exemplary table manners and to thank for the food. And they had many fun parties at home with fine food. There were always exciting celebrities visiting, like Greta Garbo, Jarl Kulle, Holger Löwenadler, because Monica's parents had a wide network and gladly had their friends at home for a nice meal.
Monica (called Mica) was sent to a boarding school for girls in Switzerland, where she would learn both languages, housework and good conduct. But the only thing she learned was to dance, Monica tells with a smile. She instead went into her mother's footsteps and became a journalist. She has three grown children - Ebba, Marianne and Carl Johan - and three grandchildren. She lives beautifully in a villa on Djurgården in a home that contains royal memories, with lots of art and with a lot of things Monica has inherited from her father. The table is decorated with a silver saucer from Gustaf VI Adolf, and the napkins come from Prince Eugen. The porcelain from Gustavsberg she inherited from her father. The champagne glasses are also from Carl Johan Bernadotte. On a table in the lounge there are a variety of silver items which belonged to Queen Louise, and on the walls hangs art, also from Prince Eugen and Crown Princess Margareta.
One of Monica's guests for this dinner was countess Marianne Bernadotte.

The 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting: 600 Young Scientists to Encounter a Record 43 Nobel Laureates
The selection process for participation at this year’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting has been completed. A total of 600 outstanding students, doctoral candidates and post-docs under the age of 35 will come to Lake Constance from 24 to 29 June. This year’s meeting is dedicated to physiology and medicine and will set two records: 43 Nobel Laureates – more than ever before at a medicine meeting – will take part, and the field of participants, with 84 countries of origin, has never been so diverse.

“This summer we will once again welcome the next generation of top researchers. I find it remarkable that we will bring together more than 80 nations in Lindau and in so doing will not only be able to enjoy an intensive exchange between generations but also one that crosses national boundaries”, says Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. “It is particularly gratifying that 50 percent of the young scientists are women.”

Thank you. I admire countess Marianne Bernadotte and I'm very interested in the extended family members in Mainau. About their work for the Mainau Island and what kind of effect they have on the business life of the Konstanz area and Germany

Countess Bettina and count Björn Bernadotte took part at the Sunday Parade of the Konstanzer Fasnacht (Carnival in Konstanz) on 11th February.

Video from December 2017

Already in 1961, Count Lennart Bernadotte invited experts, scientists and politicians to the island of Mainau to discuss environmental protection with them. As a result, he presented President Lübke the "Green Charter of Mainau".
Countess Bettina Bernadotte explained to Tobias Bücklein in an interview how this came about, what significance the charter had for the protection of the environment and the landscape and how Mainau manages the balancing act between economic success and sustainability.
The interview is done at the library of the Mainau Castle.

.

On March 13 Countess Bettina and Count Björn gave a press conference about the coming season at the Mainau island. This year's theme is "Baobab and bonobo - fascination Africa":

It's an amazing insight Count Lennart possessed to discuss environmental issues and their impact on Mainau in 1961, when the global environmental impact would not even cause concern until almost 10-15 yr. later and real concern almost 20 yr. in the 1990's. The orchids in the photos are beautiful beyond belief and I love the photo with the crocuses of spring in bloom.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte learned about EiNZIGWARE and the work of Caritas on 15th March.
Give new life to used objects and give new perspectives to people: that's the idea behind the label EiNZIGWARE. Countess Bettina Bernadotte, Managing Director of Mainau GmbH, was impressed by the variety of upcycling products and informed herself about EiNZIGWARE and the work of Caritas.

Count Björn Bernadotte and countess Bettina Bernadotte's husband Philipp Haug were interviewed at ARD's program "Konstanz, da will ich hin!", which was aired on 7th April. Obviously it has been filmed last summer.
It starts at 8.22, first they show the garden and talk with a gardener, then the host talks with count Björn about Mainau and its history. Philipp Haug is interviewed about viniculture in Mainau.

Count Björn Bernadotte gave an interview to Südkurier some weeks ago:
Björn Count Bernadotte from the Mainau island about nobility, old furniture and a big responsibility
Count Björn, do I actually address you correctly? Or should you be called Count Bernadotte?
Correct is Count Bernadotte. The title is a part of the name. On the Mainau they have agreed that Count Björn and Countess Bettina are said, because with each new generation, yes, there are also several counts and countesses Bernadotte.
Do you live in the castle yourself?
Yes, my wife and I live here in the castle. It looks huge from the outside of course, but we have a four-room apartment, like other people too. The difference is probably that we live in an old building: Since the surfaces are a bit larger, the walls thicker, the ceilings higher. And of course there are old furniture in there, they just belong to a castle.
So you live in your workplace, by profession you are "Count". Or how would you describe your work?
I am a graduated social worker. By profession I am managing director of Mainau GmbH, together with Countess Bettina. I sit on the board of the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation. Countess Bettina and I are employed as any managing directors in any other company. Our employer is Mainau GmbH and our controlling organ is the Foundation.
How does your workday look like? How does it differ from other people?
I think it's a bit different. There is no working week on Mainau from Monday to Friday and from eight in the morning until five in the afternoon. Instead, there are events, including on weekends, as the Count's Island Festival.
How important are traditions to you?
That's a thing with traditions. There are some that are beautiful and also make sense - for example the Swedish Lucia Festival, which my parents introduced on Mainau. It gives people in the dark season the hope that the brightness returns. Such traditions should be cultivated and celebrated. They are part of the culture, they have evolved over centuries and they make joy. But there are also traditions that have survived themselves.
Is there an example?
My dad has always invited to a big family party. There came many people to whom my sister and I have no close ties. With the generational change, we have decided that we do not want to continue this way. Because this tradition simply does not have the same value for us as it did for our father.
You are a count. If you had the choice, would you rather have been born without "blue blood"?
The other day I went to the doctor and had to give a blood test. There I saw that it was clearly red ... Joking aside: I think that's incredibly hard to say. Because what has formed me is not the fact that I was born as a count. But that I was born the son of the family, who lives on the Mainau, and practically grew up in this company.
What do you mean?
Not a day has gone by without Mainau being the center of attention. This company, the responsibility of my parents for the staff, for the island, the buildings, was ever-present. It is incredibly hard for me to imagine who I am or what I would be like if I had been born somewhere else or had a different character. I'm really happy with my life: I like to do the job I have, so I'm glad it happened that way.
Do not you sometimes feel burdened with work?
I would not say burden. But sometimes there are situations that can be exhausting. For two years, the roof of the castle has been repaired. This means that we have daily craftsmen who go in and out of our apartment. And that will stay that way for another three years. Sometimes I wonder if it would not be easier to live outside the castle. But as a manager, you are responsible for 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
You are married to a commoner. Has it ever mattered to you whether your future wife is from nobility?
No, that did not matter to me. It's about finding a partner I wanted to spend my life with.

Count Bjorn turns 43 today: Happy Birthday!

Nice interview, but one thing bothers me: Considering that Bjorn and his wife don't have children (and probably won't have them, giving that Countess Sandra is already 41 and three months old) who will inherit Mainau castle after them?
Count Maximilian Benedict, Count Bjorn's only agnatic nephew? (son of Count Christian & Countess Christine Bernadotte)

Björn doesn't own Mainau. His father Lennart transferred ownership to a foundation.

Count Björn doesn't own the Mainau Castle. Count Lennart Bernadotte and countess Sonja Bernadotte transferred the island to Lennart Bernadotte Foundation in 1974. As the eldest son count Björn and his wife live in the castle.
