The rubies in these earrings are big and beautiful. I much prefer the darker red rubies to the cheaper pink ones.

Quick question for the experts - would these rubies, and the ones in the accompanying necklace, be the biggest rubies being worn in today's royal families? Are there any bigger ones still being worn? I know the Iranians have some enormous rubies but they're not worn anymore for obvious reasons.

The Danish, Dutch, Spanish and Greek Royals all have some magnificent rubies; however, I do believe that the rubies in the Indian Ruby Parure are indeed the largest (at least, amongst European Royals). And don't forget Camilla's Rubies; the sheer quantity of stones in those makes up for their (relatively) small size.

Thanks, Artemisia. The Danish rubies I'm not so fussed on because they're not single rubies, they're a bit of an illusion to make it look like they are. They're actually very small and very pink when you see them in proper light. The Spanish ones are amazing though.

My word, the options Camilla has with that necklace; she could do just about anything with them. At least I hope she will; there are so many beautiful rubies there that deserve a better home than that necklace as it is.

It's a bit hard to tell from the picture, and unfortunately we are unlikely to get better ones.
I think they're different pairs. If you look at both sets of earrings you'll see that the ones HM is wearing has a single border of diamonds around the ruby, while the QM's has a thicker diamond setting encircling the ruby. And the rubies in the QM's earrings look a bit smaller than the ones HM has.

Given your user ID, I'm not surprised at your reaction! I can't blame you; the whopping size of those rubies and those diamonds are enough to knock anyone off their feet.

They look the same to me, although it's really hard to tell. The picture of the Queen Mother is, unfortunately, of very poor quality, so I've zoomed it as much as possible; the diamond around the ruby also appear to be a single row.

IDK (head scratch), maybe it's the angle or the quality of the first photo, but I think HM's ruby is larger and the QM's setting is more of a cluster of diamonds rather than a single row. This is a poser!

Don't you just hate bad quality pictures?
They make the lives of all decent jewelaholics (and I'm going to appeal to make that term official) all the more harder!

I'm going hunting!

And I think I found something that might indicate they could be one and the same pair. And here's another photo that I think shows that single border of diamonds.

The RJWMB has identified both sets as the Crown Rubies - left to the Crown by Queen Victoria.

I've seen the earrings identified as Crown Rubies elsewhere as well, but don't know any pictures of them. Could you post a picture or a link?

Warren, the earrings the Queen Mother wears in the first and second pictures - those are from the Indian Ruby Parure, aren't they?

And another question, are they by any chance also known as Crown Rubies? Because I have no idea what other rubies could be known under the name. I'm asking because those earrings are definitely the same the Queen wore recently for the Garter service, but they have been identified on different boards as "Crown Rubies" (whatever those are) and part of the Oriental (Indian) Parure (which is what I believed them to be).

Queen Mary's cluster diamond & ruby earrings are also designated as Crown Jewellery.

The Indian Circlet is also a designated "Crown Jewellery" item.
The term "Crown Rubies" generally refers to the necklace and earrings given to the Crown by Queen Victoria (seen above worn by the Queen Mother). However, as Idmemail has pointed out, Queen Mary also designated her [similar but not the same] ruby earrings to the Crown. As a result the term "Crown Rubies" may have a wider and less precise application these days.

The Queen wore Queen Mary's cluster earrings for yesterday's gala performance of 'Our Extraordinary World'.
I'm in heaven because I really do love Her Majesty's ruby jewellery.

Picture shared on basis of fair use.
