Morocco: Is King Mohammed VI the Arab Gorbachev?
This question only at first sight seems meaningless. In fact the Arab world hasn't represented for centuries a united political entity. So no matter what the politicians do in one Arab country it will have no direct repercussions on all the others. On the other hand, the Soviet Union and the Soviet empire during Gorbachev represented a clear hierarchical structure; the impulses for change coming from the very top couldn't be disregarded. Morocco is a traditional society with still strong influence of religion, especially among its numerous peasants. Communist Soviet Union by late 1980s was a secular bureaucratic society, highly urbanized and industrialized.....Article

Agadir (south), 11 Nov. 2008 (MAP) - King Mohammed VI chaired, here Tuesday, the signing ceremony of seven agreements to transfer 31 projects carried out by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity to the State.

Sidi Bibi (province of Chtouka Ait Baha, center), 12 Nov 2008 (MAP) - King Mohammed VI of Morocco inaugurated on Wednesday in the rural commune of Sidi Bibi, a center for vocational training in agriculture, marking the launch of the 11th national solidarity campaign, due on November 12 through 25.

Agadir, 13 Nov. 2008 (MAP) - King Mohammed VI laid on Thursday the foundation stone to build a Women's Centre for Upgrading Skills and a fishermen house for a total cost of MAD 6.5 mln ($735,434).

Abu Dhabi, 12 Nov. 2008 (MAP) - The 2nd conference of Arab women's organization, held in Abu Dhabi with the participation of Arab First Ladies, including Princess Lalla Salma, spouse of King Mohammed VI, launched a "media strategy" and a "network for immigrant Arab women".

Maghreb Arabe Presse: Morocco's experience in terms of women empowerment presented at AWO 2nd conference
Abu Dhabi, 12 Nov. 2008 (MAP)- Magistrate and professor at the Higher Institute of Magistracy, Zhor El Horr, highlighted, here Wednesday, Morocco's experience as regards promoting women status, stressing the achievements of Moroccan women.
Speaking at the 2nd conference of the Arab Women Organization (AWO), attended by Princess Lalla Salma, spouse of King Mohammed VI, El Horr underlined that positives changes were achieved as regards women status' improvement thanks to the sovereign's strong political will and the efficiency of civil society.
