ok, we did not see him walking but in these pictures JC does not look frail at all (he's 84 in January).

Don Juan Carlos looks good indeed. He is seated in a normal chair, so at least has been able to walk to his place.

These are the first images of the former monarch in public in some time.

Veteran journalist Fernando Onega, who has written a book about the former Spanish King and is regarded in their homeland as a personal friend of the 84-year-old, identified this Saturday as the date of Juan Carlos' return on Onda Cero radio programme Mas de Uno.
He said Juan Carlos would travel to the Galician resort of Sanxenxo, one of his favourite destinations where he has often been spotted in the past sailing with friends and family. As well as Sanxenxo, Juan Carlos is also expected to spend time in Madrid.

The ex monarch often spent time sailing at Sanxenxo, in Galicia in the past :previous:

The Galician coast is one of te nicest areas of Spain IMO so I can imagine that he enjoys being there. And AFAIK Galicia is not very anti-monarchy either, so perhaps they expect that any protests will be limited, if at all. I can't see him going to Catalunya any time soon. His wife must be looking forward to his return...

COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE HOUSE OF S.M. THE KING

His Majesty the King Don Juan Carlos has transferred this afternoon to the House of His Majesty the King his desire to make public his decision to move to Spain from tomorrow 19 until next Monday, May 23.

Don Juan Carlos plans to stay during those dates in the Galician town of Sanxenxo, and on Monday 23 travel to Madrid, to be with His Majesty the King, with His Majesty Queen Sofia and other members of his family at the Palacio de La Zarzuela. That same day, His Majesty King Juan Carlos will embark on a journey back to Abu Dhabi, where he has taken up permanent and stable residence.

This visit is part of the desire of His Majesty King Juan Carlos to travel frequently to Spain to visit family and friends, and to organize his personal life and his place of residence in private areas, as expressed in the letter he addressed to His Majesty the King on March 5.

Palacio de La Zarzuela, May 18, 2022

So he will only come to see the family for a day visit and not stay overnight.

Glad King Juan Carlos can finally return to Spain and be with his family.

A flying visit by the former monarch ,he did see both of his daughters at Easter but its been a long time since he's seen his wife, son ,daughter in law and the Infanta Sofia.

It made the news in the Netherlands as well with the heading 'Former Spanish king will definitely not stay overnight in the palace'. Apparently, he will stay in Galicia for the weekend, will fly to Madrid for a meeting with Felipe and with Sophia before he will return to his 'permanent residence' in the UAE that same day. The press release from the palace that stressed his return to the UAE on Monday, also explains that from now on the emeritus king will return to Spain regularly to visit family and friends.

Juan Carlos will not come to the regattas of Sanxenxo as planned. Obviously Zarzuela was not happy with the last return of the Emeritus, who was followed by lots of cameras and journalists, a far cry from the promised privacy during his visits. Also considered a high security risk at the nautical club of Sanxenxo and staying at a private house, he had to be protected by civil guard etc.

King Juan Carlos I has everything scheduled to return to Spain next week, between April 19th and 23rd, and participate in a set of training sessions in Sanxenxo (Pontevedra). The trip will be completely private and will not stop in Madrid to visit his son, King Felipe VI, at the Zarzuela Palace.

This visit will take place after passing through London, where he has been personally invited by King Charles III to a private lunch.

Do we know if the King ever met his son since he left for the Emirates? I understand they will not want to release a photo of course.

They were both recently at the Funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Constantine II of Greece,I assume they did meet but just not in public?

I wonder why King Charles III has invited King Juan Carlos for a private lunch. Is this related to King Juan Carlos not being included in the Spanish delegation to the coronation and King Charles III trying to make up for it?
