In an interview with former NATO Secretary General and former Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Willy Claes he claims a young King Baudouin of the Belgians was a trait d'union between Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko:

"Do you see that picture there? That was with King Baudouin, in Japan. We were there on a visit when -all of a sudden- it was announced that the Emperor would visit our embassy – abroad, that was. That never happened!"

It is fascinating how royals from geographically separated countries manage to build strong friendships between themselves. Thank you for sharing and translating this. I wonder if Baudouin and Akihito sympathized with one another as heirs to thrones which were destabilized and fathers whose reputations were irreversibly tainted by the events of World War II.
