Princess Mako attended the memorial service and was dressed in accordance with the protocol. The Japanese Imperial court strictly adheres to the protocol.

One might find attires worn by Imperial Princesses outdated. At the same time, I am sure that clothes are made from the finest silk/wool/cotton available. This is the most important thing for me. Unlike their western counterparts, Japanese Imperial Princesses are not the walking advertisement for any fashion label.

I agree. The IHA is a conservative organization and seems to have settled on a 1960s "uniform" when the Imperial women are on duty. Lots of skirt suits; nothing too tight or short; lower heels; hats, gloves, and pearl/diamond jewelry. Some individuality is allowed (Empress' cape features, CP Masako's pant suits) and the occasional variation (Princess Nobuko once wore a drape dress with a bigger, fluffy hat and higher heels).

There are photos of the Imperial women in contemporary clothing when off duty.

On May 28th, Princess Mako visited an exhibit about fantasy novels of Naoko's Kamibashi. Some of her works (including Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit) have been adapted to anime, manga, radio, and an NHK drama.

ETA: I loved the Guardian of the Spirit anime. Highly recommended, even for non-anime fans.

The IHA announced it is considering sending Princess Mako on a 10-day visit to Paraguay in early September. The visit commemorates the 80th anniversary of Japanese immigration. If finalized, it will be the second foreign trip for Princess Mako following the El Salvador and Honduras visit last December.

Masters in museum studies, and a researcher at the University museum in Tokyo, it definitely seems like a perfect pairing for her.

The family impresses me with the high importance they put on education. Both Mako's parents hold PHD's, her father in ornithology and her mother in psychology.

Prince Hisahito celebrates his 10th birthday on September 6th and the IHA has released photos, video, and info.
Asahi 1 (2-min video with bigger photo gallery)
Asahi 2 (3 photos)
A summary using Google translate:
  • Self-directed learning is in full swing from the fourth grade. 2nd semester started Sep. 1st
  • Participated vigorously in after-school play with friends and dodge disc and large jump rope
  • He walks the perimeter of his home (near Akasaka)
  • In June, Prince Hisahito climbed Mt. Takao with friends
  • He loves growing vegetables and rice under the guidance of officials. Harvested potatoes, tomatoes, and green beans are sometimes served at family dinners
As the 3rd-in-line to the throne, his education policy and public appearances are drawing attention.
  • Princess Kiko and Prince Hisahito often visit Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko
  • In August, he accompanied his parents to Niigata Prefecture to view restored dwellings and pottery from the Jomon period
  • He attended exhibits on WWII, including the Battle of Okinawa

  • IHA requested 1 additional staff for Prince Hisahito's care in the next fiscal budget
  • Tokoro Isao Professor Emeritus at Kyoto Sangyô University says a special curriculum such as political science, ethics, and history will be constructed similar to Emperor Akihito and CP Naruhito's instruction.
