THE Petra Nobel Laureates conference unfolded for the third year in this historic Jordanian town without a hitch; but what should have been smooth sailing ran into troubled waters with somewhat of a controversy arising at the closing session.

Ilana Meallem and Mazen Zoabi left a recent morning meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II smiling. The king had just proposed the formation of a regional science fund, and they were certain they would have access to it.
The two Israelis -- project managers at the Arava Institute, an environmental study and research center in southern Israel -- were among a small group of people in their 20s from Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and other Arab countries occupying a visible role at a conference of Nobel laureates in Petra.

A handout picture released by Israeli government press office shows Israeli President Shimon Peres (L) greeting Jordanian King Abdullah II and Queen Rania at the Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates in the world heritage site of Petra in southern Jordan on June 18, 2008. Jordan's King Abdullah II warned in a speech to the conference of 29 Nobel laureates whose main focus is the global food crisis and other development issues that failure to create an independent Palestinian state this year would be a "serious mistake," calling for a stable Middle East.A handout picture released by the Israeli government press office shows Israeli President and Nobel Laureate Shimon Peres (2nd L) posing for a photograph with Jordanian King Abdullah II (C), Queen Rania (2nd R), Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel (L) and his wife Marion (R) at the Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates in the world heritage site of Petra in southern Jordan on June 18, 2008. This work, the work of peace and progress, should have all our support'. News King meets participants in Petra Conference for Nobel Laureates
