Willem-Alexander, Máxima and Family, General News 5: Aug 2023 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Máxima was a weekend in Saint Tropez with friends.

It seems one of the ladies on the boat -without the sunglasses- could be her friend Janneke Dreesmann-Beerkens. Married into the billionaire Dreesmann family, lawyer, boardmember of the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam and mother of 6. She and her husband Marc are one of the neighbours in Greece and Amalia is living in one of their properties in Amsterdam.

She and her husband are living in Brasschaat, near Antwerp. Many rich Dutch people do for tax reasons.

I do not recognise the other one, with the sun glasses. Could it be her Argentine friend Samantha Deane, Bss Rengers married into the Dutch noble Van Welderen family - with a new hair colour? Or maybe simply somebody else.

Can’t blame her for going south, the weather has been awful. And as these photos will not be published in the Netherlands, they will have little effect on her image at home.

Why won't they published in Netherland? Man could not get this newspaper there? And why would be this bad for her image? Other women can make also such trips, why could not she make this?

They certainly will not. The magazines are afraid to lose their access to the RF photo shoots and fear the law suits that will inevitable follow due to the media code etc.

Amazing that this media code still holds the local magazines hostages, what do they fear? The girls are almost adults/not living at home anymore, there are something like two boring photoshoots per year, most of the time not even the complete family.
Its the only RF who does these luxury holidays/jet set lifestyle so very frequently, how convenient from them to basically have a gag order over the local media.

During photo sessions the king, queen and three princesses are always present, so I don't understand your comment that most of the time the complete family isn't present.

Privacy laws are quite strict in the Netherlands. There is a general understanding -under Dutch law- that private pictures are not to be published (but in practice can be taken if you encounter members of the royal family somewhere) and if they are published can be challenged in court - where a judge will consider whether it was sufficiently in the public interest to outweigh their right to privacy in their private lives.

Based on the media code, I believe the media are free to write or talk about their travels etc but if they also publish pictures, the royal family made it known that those media won't be given the opportunity to participate in the photo calls. If they do publish, they loose access and might be challenged in court (as in the end, it is up to the court to allow or not allow the publication of such pictures).

Evert Santegoeds, editor of the biggest gossip magazine, once said that the lack of access to the photo sessions wasn't the only concern indeed. The costly legal cases are another one. It simply doesn't make financial sense. Printed press doesn't have the same revenue it had in the 1990s and they simply can't afford those cases and the headache.

So that means that for Orange-Nassau updates we seem to be better served by the Spanish/Argentine press than by our own.

The question is of course: does it matter?

It may matter in the end, to me - and I believe younger people/tougher times will even speed up this process - monarchy is not there to live a jet set life in the face of their subjects and more or less dictate the media what to do, hiding behind 'privacy'. The same issue has already dealt a blow to the DRF, whose approval rates have gone down especially after the greek holiday scandal. Its about the mindset. It may not matter in my lifetime, but in the end it is possible that such antics will speed up the process of abolishment. Maybe they dont even care, they are rich enough to enjoy the money without having to work inbetween holidays.

I am a little surprised why the Queen spending a few days in the sun on a private break is a big deal at all. All of us do it, from time to time. Fred & Mary disappear from time to time, as do Queen Camilla and King Charles. I just do not see it as an issue.

In itself not, but the dutch royals seen to want to be seen as royals during office-hours only, like well-paid government officials
maybe it's just me..

I do not understand the thingy with the Dutch media code at all! I mean, there is this "new" thing, this internet - there are no gate keeping possibilities for the media or the royal courtiers anymore!

The media code has been in place for about 20 years - it was established when the princesses were born.

Queen Maxima is really disliked by a portion of members on here for being what I would consider too competent, too confident, too at ease with herself and her Joie de vivre. Thé fact that she "works hard and play hard" with a visibly vibrant social life of her own, work of her own aside from being a consort, ruffle feathers.

I dont think it is that black and white to explain, as their groveling apology after the greek scandal shows.

Presumably we’ll see more of the family in London since Alexia is there. Especially if they go to places that have photographers outside.

No surprise indeed that they hop over to London once in a while now Alexia is living/studying there. They also did so frequently when Friso was in hospital.

It seems the King did not join his wife As the gossip press likes to remind us: Máxima said to the press that with the girls out of the house she has more time to focus on her work. But she did not mention spending more time with her husband. Speculations about a marriage crises have been going on ever since, and with that small quote and these recent single trips as sole edvidence.

It is indeed only 1 hour away by plane, so it is easy and cheap to hop over and many people do for a weekend.

This is behind a paywall. If this is actually an exclusive interview with Hola! I am surprised. I am sure she could have been interviewed by one of our own newspapers as well, though the photoshoot would have been less glamarous.

I've read the whole interview on the magazine's website, in case it's identical to the paper version, it's 90% about her work for the UN, her old role and the new one as UN Special Advocate for Financial Health, hardly anything private, only that her family has always been a great support, that she can give advice to her daughters, general things, no sensations or anything new ;);)

What a great photo of the Queen and her family!

Is anything known about her brothers? I recall Juan married many years ago. Is he still married? Did they have children? Martin divorced his first wife many years ago. Did he remarry and/or have children?

Lastly where does the Queen's mother now reside. She is getting up there in age. Is she still residing primarily in Argentina or perhaps Europe-closer to 2 out of her 3 children and grandchildren.

Wonder what was the event or just a catch up,I never realised that Queen Máxima was that friendly with the Greek Crown Princely Couple.
They have mutual friends among the wealthy Greek shipping magnates and the Dutch royals do own property in Greece. Don’t forget a few years ago, Máxima was at a party hosted by Pavlos in the U.K

My God. He got it all wrong per the police explanation and now looks like a fool :/

I am not sure why you think the king looked like a fool when he echoed the exact same sentiments as his government and the mayor of Amsterdam,

"Amsterdam’s police chief, Peter Holla, said there had been “incidents on both sides”, starting on Wednesday night when Maccabi fans tore down a Palestinian flag from the facade of a building in the city centre, shouted “**** you Palestine” and destroyed a taxi."

Not quite the antisemitic attacks that was initially presented, therefore the King should have waited to have all facts. News are now coming out from the lo population that indeed those fans brought troubles to their neighborhood, with various chants inciting to violence against Arabs etc with video proof as well. Classic case of FAFO.

The sentiments echoed by the King, the Government, the Mayor of Amsterdam and officials all over Europe have been proven one-sided and there's been a huge backlash during the weekend against the communication of European authorities, the press coverage of the incident and how the incidents were managed by the police. There seems to be some clear political motivations behind how the actions of football hooligans and those reacting to said actions and also protesters against them, and their team, being allowed to enter the country have been portrayed.
Had the King waited the whole picture would have been clearer and his well-meaning message would most likely have been worded differently. That said, he did right in speaking out. Racism and rioting should be condemned no matter who commits it.
