Trooping the Colour 2: 2023 -

A line has to be drawn somewhere and, with all due respect to them, I don't think we particularly need all the descendants of the Kents and Gloucesters on the balcony. Sophie Winkleman is well known because she's an actress and because she's Claudia Winkleman's half-sister, but most people are not familiar with Lady Davina Windsor, the Earl of Ulster, etc. But it would be nice to see the King's nieces and nephews and their families. Zara and Mike are pretty high profile, and there were pictures all over last weekend's papers of Eugenie at the Westminsters' wedding. And people love seeing all the kids together - the cute picture of Charlotte handing Mia a posy of flowers last Christmas was all over everywhere. There's a lot of interest in them all, and I think people would appreciate their being included. We all know that Andrew is persona non grata, so nobody's going to make a big deal about him not being there whilst the others are.

It also makes things simpler.
Working royals and children of working royals only on the balcony makes sense for the BRF, I think.
It also makes it clear who is there and why. So no speculations needed and no one needs to feel snubbed. If you are not a working member of the BRF, you are not there, period.
It's a KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid.

Happy to see Princess Katherine after so many months. She looked stunning as always, happy to see Lady Louise and I agree, it would be more interesting to more of the family on the balcony. Watching the children's reactions to the flyover has always been a treat.

I loved the Princess of Wales sitting in a closed carriage with her 3 Children , then her carriage stopped and she looked the Trooping sitting inside. Again the carriage to B. Palace and standing on the Balcony. Light excellent program .
I liked the Prince of Wales after his Father's carriage on horseback with the Princess Royal on his right and his Uncle Edward on his left.
I liked the old Duke of Kent belng there too.
Too much posts about the balcony and Princess Louise.

I hope we get to see Louise and James for many years at Trooping the Colour. The balcony is so empty! I still prefer the whole family up there, Good to see Catherine!

With Trooping the Colour coming soon here's an article stating that HM King Charles III will opt to ride in a carriage again this year. IMO this is a wise decision.

As much as i loved to see KCIII doing his first trooping as king on horseback, i won’t deny that i felt much calmer last year with him safely in the scottish state coach instead…

With him being 76 and being treated for cancer, the last thing i want to see is a horse throwing him off…

You can probably see more in a carriage looking around, and not also concentrating on the Horse handling. I think there is a party for the extended family sometimes behind the scenes and the main parade begins a long while before the famous balcony bit for working Royals and some of their children. So, it's not a short day for anyone and maybe better to pace the self a bit.

With the only people on the balcony now being working royals it's unlikely you will see James and Louise going forward. It was odd that Louise was on it last year, and she also rode in a carraige, as she isn't one. It's a pity the King couldn't have let Trooping continue as a big family day as we get that it's working royals every other time. It would have been nice to continue seeing a lot of children on the balcony like it used to be. The Wales children, I think, would enjoy the company of other children rather than standing with their parents and other (fairly old) adults.

I saw GB News do an interview the guy who runs republic with their horrible yellow "Not my King" banners when they 'protested' at the Lancaster Castle engagement. He said they had plans to protest "right in front of the balcony" at Trooping so I feel safe knowing Charles will be safe in a carriage. I felt last year the horses were spooked by all the extra noise of Republic chanting and the crowds trying to drown them out.

I agree it used to be fun seeing the interactions of the whole family on the balcony. I don’t think it was bad optics to have a large number ( I think the argument goes that suggests the country is supporting too many royals). People who are anti royal will maintain this view whether there are ten or thirty on the balcony . I like to think it’s the whole family together celebrating the official birthday of the monarch whether they’re ‘working royals’ or not.

Absolutely, it's the official birthday celebration of the Monarch so there's nothing wrong with a big family gathering for that.

I think it still would be that if not for the Andrew and Sussex problem. Despite his plans for a slimmed down number of publicly-supported royals, I don't think King Charles is opposed to having the entire family on the balcony. I think even the staunchest Republicans could look at a full balcony and understand their tax dollars aren't subsidizing the entire family.

I just think that the King (and HLMTQ before him) realize that the minute he opens this balcony up to the entire family again, opportunistic Andrew would put himself front and center the way he managed to do at Easter and Prince Phillip's memorial service. And Harry and Meghan would suddenly find the spirit of "forgiveness" in themselves and decide to attend Trooping as the first step in supposedly "mending fences."

Sadly, there's no way to invite the extended family onto the balcony while excluding those three that won't seem punitive and dominate the headlines, so I think it's the path of least resistance to keep limiting it to working royals. It's too bad, because I love seeing all the cousins together, especially the youngest generation.

When William will be King will the date of Trooping the Colour be changed towards his birthday to secure that his real birthday will be "celebrated"?

Its a an old royal tradition of having 2 birthdays (King Charles III was born in November)
King Edward VII moved Trooping of the Colour to summer months because of the British climate.
William was born in June so it probably will remain in June and I don't think he will have 2 birthdays?

Given that it has been on the Second Saturday in June since 1748, I don't see a reason for them to change (even though William's birthday is in June as well but some previous more recent monarchs also had their birthday in June, including George V and Edward III, or late May, including Victoria and George III) - moreover, I think (king) William will be happy to celebrate his birthday private a week or so after his official celebration.

Why Is Trooping the Colour In June

Why is it in June instead of November when the King’s actual birthday is? The simple answer: British Weather.

Standing outside for a couple hours in drizzling rain isn’t anyone’s idea of a great time. That's why King George II, who also was born in November, decided to move his birthday party to sunnier skies back in 1748 - who can blame him to be fair. It was from this point on, the monarch’s “official birthday” has been celebrated on the second Saturday of June every year since.

but then the real birthday is/was only celebrated on round birthdays not in normal years.

The Monarchs actual birthday is normally marked by gun salutes unless its a milestone event.

Ok but that is hardly a celebration as for example the annual Balcony appearances in Denmark and Sweden at the Monarch's birthday

The actual birthday is lowkey other than the gun salute the pomp and balcony appearance takes place at Trooping the Colour.
Personally I wouldn't like to be on the BP balcony in November.

And that is why i said it is only celebrated at milestone birthdays.
I have too say the could there be a little bit like it was the case for the Queen Mother's birthdays. I found it always odd that there was a little celebration for her but nothing for the actual Monarch

I feel like she loved a little bit of spotlight and an excuse for a gathering and a party. And nothing wrong with that.

She was also immensely popular to those alive during WW2 and just seemed like a good time gal!

Do those monarchs have something similar to TTColour as well?

I agree to a degree, but don't forget it was said to be largely down to Charles that only HLM, Charles, Camilla, William, Catherine and Harry appeared on the balcony during the Diamond Jubilee. This was well before before the Harry and Andrew sagas (though when has Andrew not been a trouble).

Yes, it's a sensible change, considering his age and health issues.
Although, with all his experience, it is unlikely that Charles would ever be thrown off.
