'Together At Christmas' Carol Service at Westminster Abbey: 2022 - 2025

Speaking of the children’s or grandchildren’s attendance at the Christmas Carol, I don’t think we’ll see much turnout in the future. The children and grandchildren of the Edinburghs, Tindals, Gloucesters, and Kents are all living more private lives and may not enjoy this kind of media attention. Perhaps in the future, we’ll only see the Wales children.

That very much remains to be seen!

I would think turn out would have more to do with their interest level in the concert or other holiday commitments rather than cameras, but perhaps that is an issue.

Lady Louise has accompanied her mother to this service once or twice if i remember correctly… But now she has university and is likely not at home for christmas yet…. James i get the impression strongly dislikes anything that has with tv’s and cameras to do… He clearly has not easy with the attention…

Peter Phillips does not live in London and may have had other commitments… It’s a very busy time of the year for many people…

St Andrew's university - where Louise is - is still going until 23rd December so she probably missed this as she was still in Scotland. Radley College - where James reportedly now attends was also not yet on Christmas break and it is a full boarding college (like Eton) so attending wasn't an option for him without being given special treatment which he clearly would be uncomfortable receiving.

Given William's desire to reduce the size of the royal family I also don't see the grandchildren of the extended family, or even much of the extended family, attending many events in the future.

I can see a day when the only people on the balcony or at any events are the Sovereign and spouse and heir and spouse and the rest largely told to 'go their own way'.

And I'm sure even that small amount still won't satisfy the nay-sayers. But I expect you're right. But, like Princess Anne more or less said, i don't see how the RF can do as much as they have been with less and less people. But I suppose that argument is for another thread.

As a Christian, I love to see the RF support this kind of event; I think it's wonderful. And since I know who the extended RF are, I like to see them there, right down to the Gloucester and Kent grandchildren who aren't royal in any way. I believe in royalty. I don't believe any of them are any better, or any worse, than me; we're all equal; but it does add just a bit of, I don't know, a bit of magic in this very dull age. And if the King and Queen just happened to walk down my street, I'd give them a quick bob of a curtsey.

Did Arthur and Samuel Chatto attend the Christmas Carol Service?

Genuine question: what would be the purpose of putting everyone (royal extended family) on the balcony?

I'm a non-Commonwealth realm citizen so I have no say on the continuation of the British RF, but as royal watcher, I prefer this church setting than the balcony setting to "watch" the extended families since I can have photo with proper look at them instead of just part of their head on the balcony because on the balcony full of people, unless they're children or working royals, they would be standing in the back (so for the ladies, we might only see the top of their hat particularly if they're standing behind William).

It's great and in there a tiny reminder that fun Christmas food to share or gift or just enjoy doesn't have to be complicated. You can buy fresh ginerbread blocks at many supermarkets in the uk and just cut it into simple shapes with a cutter, bake and share with a cup of tea, mulled light wine, chocolate or anything else. Or perhaps use a simple shortbread or biscuit recipe. You don't need to make the whole house thing and spend ages, if you do, that's great but basic is good too.

I was expecting a quatre mains but that's probably a bit too much to ask at Charlotte's age. Maybe in a few years...

A sense of unity to mark an moment in both family history and the event. Just like when large families get together and someone has to take a picture to include everyone fit on the frame.

It's a ritual old as time to include everyone because some day that person in that photo will be gone but the feeling of that moment, the family gathering in one place, will keep that memory going.
