On Nov 21, King Felipe will impose the Order of the Golden Fleece on his mother, Queen Sofia.
The PoA and Infanta Sofia will be present.
We'll see if the Infantas will be present; the article speculates about a family gathering on the Saturday, with possibly JC present as well.

Glad to hear of a major family gathering, I'm not sure on Juan Carlos considering this is a moment dedicated to his wife, whom he decided to stay separated from years ago when he moved to another country. But it also gives Sofia a grand moment to show she, like a true royal. She can overlook his antics and show she is here for the honor her son rewards for her dedication to her duties as queen and role model to generations of people since the 1960s.

I hope its a tiara event because it would be a great moment to see her granddaughters in a gala look to honor queen Sofia.

I very much doubt that it will be a tiara event but Queen Sofia has the better jewel collection and hopefully we will see her earls and ruby pendant.

On Saturday there will be a private lunch at El Pardo Palace, which will be attended by the Royal Family and the King's Family.

Still, the main family will be there, at least Elena & Cristina and probably all grandchildren, no JC and if Irene of Greece is not present, she is seriously ill as already indicated.

Here are some first photos of today's ceremony:

Moving Ceremony and Queen Sofia was very elegant. I almost did not recognize Felipe González. What i found a bit odd was that Infantas Elena and Cristina were not present. After all it was an Event honoring their mother

According to TVE, Crown Prince Pavlos, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, and other members of the Greek Royal Family are also present.

I assume they would have been present, had they been invited. But apparently, their brother didn't invite them (nor was his father invited it seems). I don't recall who were present when Leonor received her order (at a very early age - I still don't understand why they didn't wait for her to turn 18).

I think we all know why Juan Carlos wasn't invited.

And since Felipe couldn't invite his father for political reasons, it was probably best to keep the guest list limited to working royals. It wasn't just an investiture for Queen Sofia either, so it wasn't a family event but a working event.

The Spanish royals typically keep a limited guest list for all events, not just this one. The older Infantas weren't present when Leonor swore her oath to the Constitution at 18 either, I think.

I read that Nina Flohr was there, but I don't think the woman in the background is Nina. I've seen photos, and she's the girlfriend of one of Infanta Cristina's sons.

So, is this gathering to celebrate Sophia's elevation to the order of the Golden Fleece or to commemorate the accession to the throne of Juan Carlos 50 years ago? Or perhaps a bit of both?!

How lovely that Sophia's sister-in-law and nieces and nephews are also present.

Probably depends who you ask - officially I suspect its more acceptable to say its for Sofia, whilst within the family it is possibly for a bit of both?

Edit - having read the articles posted it seems the media are saying the lunch was for the 50th anniversary of the monarchy.

Apparently it was a "cocktail style" lunch - so avoiding any awkward seating plans.

They enjoyed a cocktail-moment at first, but then the family sat around a large table placed at the Patio de los Borbones, the seating was not planned and everyone sat where they felt comfortable. After the official luncheon, the guests enjoyed a round of coffee before leaving the Royal Palace around 17:30.

That's a lot of inside information; maybe you can share your source?

I did read that Juan Carlos left around 5 pm and that was presented as some kind of concession/a way for him to be present but not stay until the end. But if the others left only 30 minutes later, that doesn't make a lot of sense. He probably had to leave slightly earlier to catch a plane.

My source is:

«Muy buen ambiente» en el almuerzo y «relación cariñosa» entre el Rey y Don Juan Carlos

The luncheon lasted 4 hours, it ended at 5 pm, Juan Carlos I was the first to leave the palace followed by his grandson Felipe de Marichalar (son of infanta Elena) and literally three minutes later king Felipe VI left the place aswell. The rest of the extended Bourbon family was pictured leaving the palace shortly after TM.

When Leonor received her Toison de Oro (just to compare events as you mentioned the oath to the constitution), almost the complete family was around, with the exception of Cristina, meaning a full set of grandparents from both sides, including the disgraced Emeritus, and Infanta Elena. But it was her own day, didnt share it with three other people like Sofia sr.

Thanks. Is it known why the Queen emerita did not have her own ceremony of investiture as the Princess of Asturias did?

Leonor is the Princess of Asturias, the heir to the Crown and therefore the future head of the order. King Felipe celebrated his birthday by handing the order to his heir, who was also a child... it was not the context to invest another person. Until very recently there wasn't even an official award ceremony; it was a private affair.

Queen Sofia has been recognized for her service to the Crown and to Spanish society, and has shared the ceremony with prominent figures of the Transition on the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Monarchy. Bringing those people together in that context did have a symbolic meaning.
