The Princess of Orange, News and Events Part 2 (Jan 2024 - present)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Today, the Princess of Orange participates in the traditional Graduation Ceremony at the University of Amsterdam. With this ceremony, the university marks the end of the bachelor's program. King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Princesses Beatrice, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane are also in attendance.

Ariane always seems to genuinly have fun wherever she is

The press release contains some additional information:

Her Royal Highness the Princess of Orange attended the Graduation Ceremony for the Bachelor's program in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Monday afternoon, July 14. The University of Amsterdam marks the end of the bachelor's program with this traditional ceremony. Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and Their Royal Highnesses Princess Beatrix, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane of the Netherlands were also present.

The Princess of Orange's final thesis is titled "Beyond Disclosure: Bridging the Gap Between the Artificial Intelligence Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights with Deepfaked Bodies." It examines the tension between European fundamental rights and AI legislation.

Due to the Princess's broken arm, one course has been postponed. After successfully completing this course, the Princess of Orange will receive her bachelor's degree in PPLE. In the new academic year, the Princess will begin a bachelor's degree in Dutch Law, also at the University of Amsterdam, and will participate in the Defensity College program.

Both her outfit and her attitude, Alexia is giving off 'they woke me up 10 minutes before leaving, and I am still recovering from a late night' vibe.

Arianne and the others seem genuinely happy and proud to be there. Especially Grandma Beatrix. Glad to see her there with the family.

Congratulations to HRH the Princess of Orange!!1

Weird ceremony - I guess tailoring to the international student body of this program. She received a certificate of attendance for attending the graduation ceremony but didn’t receive her degree yet or they would have handed those out/she would have posed with her degree.

Thats a lovely family photo (apart from Alexia ☹️)
Are academic gowns not a thing when graduating in the Netherlands?
No, they are not. Neither is the cap she is wearing. However, I assume they are tailoring to the international student body of this particular program.

She seemingly received a letter of attendance for her program not ceremony. She has a course left to graduate due to her arm. She was allowed to participate despite delayed completion.

I am trying to understand the 'one course left due to her arm' statement - as she relatively recently broker her arm and typically, when a student starts their thesis work all previous courses have been offered and could have been completed.

Based on the set up of this specific program (which consists of 6 periods a year with periods 3 and 6 having half the weight of the other periods), the students start their thesis work in period 5 to be completed in period 6. During period 5 also they take one final course (with examination taking place at the end - which took place in May - before she broke her arm). In their third year, they are also expected to take two electives, so the most likely reason seems to be that she wasn't able to complete/fully participate in one of the electives (if scheduled for period 6, i.e. the month of June).

I also found that odd. But it could be a course she had to repeat anyway, but was unable to take the exam due to her fall and arm.

Personally i don´t see the point of two bachelors and not doing a master (yet) . But in this case of Amalia it makes sense that she has time to combine it with the military training, which would be impossible with a master programme.

According to Rick Evers the family came with the government plane from Greece for this certificate of attendence. And they are now back to Greece again. 75.000 EUR per flight.

I agree. There is nothing traditional about this ceremony. I studied at the UvA, between 2001-2009. Both BA and MA. No ceremony at BA, just pick up your paper at the administration-desk. Certainly nothing with those hats. MA ceremony was a presentation of your thesis after which you received your mark. That was it. No hats, no robes. They only have robes when defending your PhD.
So, no idea what this is all about.

I honestly don't know what to make of the photo.
It was obviously staged (with the graduation cap and "certificate") but no one bothered to remove the Gucci purse on the floor or tell a hangry-looking Alexia to smile and to put away her cell phone with the "matcha princess" sticker.

Congratulations to the Princess of Oranje!

That was my first thought as well but the text on the certificate clearly states ‘PPLE College of the University of Amsterdam hereby presents this Certificate of Attandance on 14 July 2025 for participation in the PPLE graduation ceremony’.

Note that it doesn’t include her name, so I assume other students received the same certificate.

The committee wears robes when someone is defending a PhD thesis, not even the candidate.

Sad no pictures of her with Full degree Graduated and the University Staff.

She doesn't have her degree yet... and a Bachelor at a research university is just considered an 'in-between' degree (as a step towards a master's degree), so not deemed that important in the Netherlands (N.B. This is different for those getting a Bachelor at a 'university for applied sciences' where it would be the final degree for most students). Typically, only if she would receive her PhD would pictures with her supervisors be taken.

PPLE consists of 4 majors, based on her thesis (Beyond Disclosure: Bridging the Gap Between the Artificial Intelligence Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights with Deepfaked Bodies), it looks like Amalia majored in Law. So, that makes it even more likely that she will be able to do a shortened trajectory (probably 2 years? which is also the requirement for her Defensity College work student program) for her Bachelor's degree in Law Bachelor.

She will be expected to work 8 to 16 hours a week as part of the Defensity College program; and in addition to that she will be able to take part in various 'training activities' (which can be as much as 1 day a week if she works 16 hours or 4 hours a week if she works 8 hours).

Comparing the two programs (and based on the thesis Amalia wrote), it seems that the exam committee will most likely exempt her from doing about half of the subjects in the first year, probably one subject related to Europan/international law each in the second and third year as well as all electives in the third year (she can use her PPLE courses to cover for that) - as she will be able to proof that she already completed comparable courses or covered it in her thesis work. So, if my assessment is accurate, she might receive an exemption for 57 EC, leaving 123 EC out of the 180 EC to be completed for her LLB degree (after completion of her PPLE program). After this analysis, I now also understand a bit better why she decided to also do Dutch Law as the PPLE program - because of its international orientation- focused on European and Comparative Law. As she will be the Head of State of the Netherlands, it makes sense to do a deeper dive into Dutch Law.

Wouldn’t have hurt Alexia to tuck her shirt in all the way and smile for the picture, was she out partying the night before? Everyone else looks great though, Grandma Beatrix looks adorable.

Congrats to Princess Amalia!

The ceremony took place in the larger concert hall of the concertgebouw, as allthingsamalia has a clip on its instagram stories, from a tiktok account by the name niovi_eco. It seems Amalia was dressed in a simular way as her fellow students.

I love the photos they seems semi staged if you get what I mean it’s like the summer photo sessions they do each year, it is staged but they want it to be more relaxed family photos!

Although I am almost a decade older than alexia but I do like her style it’s more youthful and trendy, spoiler alert smiling in photos in photos is cliche now if you scroll through instagram 😅

We did see her in two opening of parliament and she did dress appropriately and we can say a conservative for her age!

Ps: I’m writing this while drinking matcha so I might be biased 😅

Before the graduation ceremony, the Princess of Orange took a trip to Greece with some friends.

Being part of a 'dispuut' was part of Amalia's dream for her student life, so I am glad that she was able to fully integrate into one - although I personally would not recommend joining that particular student corps.

Is that the same one that was in some kind of scandal a few years ago?

Yes, that is why she did not join it at the time. They promissed some changes and that was that.

There has always been a protective shield around these student corpses. Especially the posher ones. In Flanders recently there was a case where a young man [from a refugee family] who was tortured to death and those responsible received very low sentences by sympathetic judges, as not to endanger their future carreers.

They can do what they want and every other year a student gets tortured to death or dies of alcohol poisoning during the first week. After there is a public outcry the university treatens to remove funds -> they promise to change -> 2 years later the same thing happens and we start all over again.

But at least Amalia was there in a period where no scandal occurred, though I imagine she may continue the next years too.

I actually see her resembling Maxima here

Is a disputt similar to an American fraternity or sorority? Or like the Bullingdon club in Oxford.

Within a student corps (which is mixed gender), all students join a (single gender) dispuut. In this case, there are about 2700 members divided over 38 disputen, of which half of them are for women. Within a dispuut, students are also part of a year group -of students who joined the same year-. I suppose that’s the group in the picture. So, it is a specific group within a student corps that is expected to be your core group over the years.
