She already seems to have more gravitas than her parents combined :).

The princess was accompanied by an aide-de-camp of her father and by her mother's lady-in-waiting from Rotterdam, Anna Magdalena (Annemijn) Crince le Roy-van Munster van Heuven (lady with the blue hat). Appropriately for this visit she used to work for the navy. She is related to the late Jacoba Henriëtta Marianna Agatha van Lawick van Pabst-Doude van Troostwijk a dame du palais for Queen Juliana and a 1st cousin of her paternal grandmother. Relatives from her fathers side of the family used to manage the palace and domain of Het Loo in Apeldoorn. Her husband is a lawyer and the former chairman of the Dutch order of lawyers (The Netherlands Bar). His family is of Huguenot descent and had ties to the former Dutch East Indies, the island of Java specifically, where they worked in the local government.

Among the party were the mayor of Vlissingen (Flushing), the governor of the province of Zeeland, an underminister and an admiral.

Dignitas, she certainly has.

Also, Dutch aristocratic names sure seem to give their British counterparts a run for their money in length.

In the podcast 'Royal Tea' royalty journalist Rick Evers [Who discovered the difference of the Dutch translation and English original of Scobie's book about the Sussexes] claims that Amalia has a boyfriend now but he does not reveal anything else, other than that it is not Prince Boris.

The last months several journalists, including Evers, said that with prince Boris there was and is only a friendship. Several of these reporters have hinted strongly that Prince Boris is not romantically interested in the opposite sex. That includes main stream shows such as RTL Boulevard where Jeroen Snel made this claim a month ago or so.

Today the king explained that the ship was finished later than originally planned, which is why this 'first solo event' also took place later than might have been expected.

Eh...sure. Is there some in the books that says a Dutch Princess' first solo event must be the baptism of a ship?

I can think of several other events that Amalia could have done as a first solo event.

It seems the baptism of a vessel is indeed typically the first solo event of a Dutch prince or princess. So, I can see why they would want to stick to that tradition. I assume the one that Amalia baptized recently had been planned for her for quite some time (probably before the baptism of a ship by Alexia).

The below are all first solo events:
- Beatrix baptized a submarine in 1955 (also in Vlissingen)
- Margriet baptized a ship carrying her name ('Prinses Margriet) in 1966 [not 100% this was the first ship she baptized but she did baptize a ship as first solo activity - looking for confirmation whether it was this one]
- Willem-Alexander baptized a plane carrying his name ('Prins van Oranje') in 1987 (his second solo event that year was the baptism of a ship).
- Máxima baptized a ship carrying her husband's name ('Prins Willem-Alexander') in 2003
- Alexia baptized a hopper dredger carrying her name ('VOX Alexia') in 2023
- Amalia baptized a combat support ship in 2025

Thank you for sharing this information. As a nation with a long history associated with sea, I can understand why baptizing a boat/ship would be considered a tradition for a new royal.

Hopefully they'll be able to enjoy some privacy together.

I think it's in bad taste that these journalists make these insinuations about Prince Boris, even if it could be true. But anyway, that's the press we have these days.

I wondered about the reasons for the reporters' "hints". If a private citizen who happens to be friends with the crown princess (and speculated to be her boyfriend) is gay or aromantic etc. and is fine with that being known to the general public, what prevents the aforementioned journalists from simply saying so instead of alluding to it ambiguously? On the other hand, if the friend does not wish to be outed in the public domain (or if it simply isn't true), what is the public interest in hinting at it without his consent, given that he is of no particular importance to the public outside of royalty buffs?

The press has always been like this
I first noticed this while reading about the Romanovs and it wasn't long before I saw, even to my surprise, American newspapers/magazines

Especially as they would likely never say (or hint) that someone is a womanizer who has no interest in a serious or monogamous relationship, for example…

What do you think prince Albert of Monaco's reputation was?

However, we are getting off-topic.

What do you think prince Albert of Monaco's reputation was?
Something that he made by not living discreetly as a wealthy heir and sovereign prince, whereas we are speculating about obscure potential marriage candidates?

So we will see if Ariane will also baptize a ship this year

Not necessarily this year. In Alexia'a case the ship carrying her name surely contributrd to hers being only a few months after her 18th birthday. But as a very solo act, yes, that seems very likely.

Today, April 7, the Princess of Orange unveiled a plaque at the small tulip garden at the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid to thank the city for the time she has spent there:

"Madrid is my second home", Amalia said, "especially in a particularly difficult time for me".

Wonderful to see her looking so well! Hope the difficulty she is talking about has become less so.

There was clearly still a high level of security but she seemed very relaxed and took the time to thank the mayor (?) and pose for pictures.

Security was standard for a Crown Princess. It doesn't seem out of the ordinary for Spain, especially in a tourist area. That garden is next to the Royal Palace. A few years ago, King Felipe and the President of Portugal walked across that square and had lunch on a terrace next to the garden, and there were no security problems.

I believe that security is no justification for doing things as badly as the Dutch Royal House seems to have done, according to some reports. They didn't publicly announce the event, and they made the Madrid City Council withdraw its announcement of the event and say that it was postponed or that it was private, creating a lot of confusion. Today it has been seen that they have invited the Dutch press, which normally covers their activities and strictly adheres to the code... but only a couple of Spanish media and at the last minute.

The Dutch Royal House shared a beautiful photo of the Princess of Orange today in Madrid.

The Princess of Orange said:
“Madrid is like a second home for me, especially at a difficult time for me in Holland.
In a very Dutch way, I would like to thank everyone for taking care of my safety and having a good time here in Madrid.
Thank you very much”

What a lovely gesture. I would love to find a better video of what amalia said in Spanish but her command of the language seems really good as one would expect. I did notice a bit of an accent but it may have been that I didn’t find a good / clear video.

Lovely to see her on her own, let’s hope HRH will have another event in The Netherlands soon too. The gesture is a thoughtful one.

It is obviously official, with the mayor there, the ambassador and also not even a lady-in-waiting but the Grand Mistress the Countess van Zuylen van Nijevelt herself.

I don't think anybody mentioned security problems perse. Though the Dutch media was surprised by the amoun of security, normal in Spain perhaps as you say. And they claimed that earlier today the Spanish press said that the event had been cancelled due to security concerns, which evidently was not the case.

Modekoningin's Josine Evers asked the RVD who paid for the plaquette, and it was Amalia herself - they said it was a private gift. I assume the flowers and plaquette will be there for the season and will be removed? Though I believe they are still sending bulbs to Ottawa, which was initially meant as a thank-you for the hospitality during the war. I am not sure who pays for those but I imagine it might be the Foreign office after so many years.

I think it may have been the first time we heard her say a few phrases in Spanish?

If I am not mistaken, we've heard her speak Spanish as a child in video footage as part of a documentary on Willem-Alexander showing a little bit of his private life. However, this will have been her first time in an official capacity.

Maybe Amalia will continue to pay for the tulips (or even upkeep) herself? A few bulbs can’t make much difference in her official grant. And she seems just about as grateful as her great-grandmother for the refuge and protection — perhaps it’s partly where she got the idea. Cities are usually proud of offering hospitality to princesses in duress, so perhaps Madrid wants to keep it.

She looks well and quite a bit more relaxed. Nature is good for the spirit and it was a particularly nice event for her. 🌷🌷

It was lovely to see Amalia in Madrid, my home city, saying it was her second home. :giggle:

She's growing in confidence in her solo appearances, which is great to see. She doesn't have the flamboyant style of her mother and seems much quieter, like her father and her paternal grandmother, which is really lovely.
