The Princess of Orange, News and Events Part 2 (Jan 2024 - present)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It’s the elite student corps in Amsterdam. Their reputation is no different to those in other cities and Willem-Alexander and his cousins all joined these corpora when they were students (3 of the Van Vollenhoven princes met their wives there) as does a large part of the Dutch upper class (and those aspiring to become part of it). The difference is that that type of behavior is more frowned upon now than in the past.

In that case, has the more recent reporting and discourse about those types of behavior impacted public perceptions of the royal house, or elites in general, or those princes in particular?

I don´t think so, we are used to this type of behavior of the student corps. And at least there have been no alcoholic comas or deaths in recent years, as there were in the past. But today the focus is on other things that were previously accepted such as sexism and humiliation.

Earlier this year the city counsil of the island of Texel decided to stop the 75 year old tradition of members of the Utrecht corps serving as a life guard, mostly because there were many incidents of sexual harassement of young women on the island by drunk students. The Utrecht Student Corps claimed that there was no problem but that they were unfairly treated in the press.

I do not know anybody who looks favourably on these student groups apart from people who have been or are a member though. But it is what is expected of people with a certain accent, who play field hockey come from places like Wassenaar etc. such as Amalia. There were one or two opinion articles against it, but that was it. In general few people will care little, which is the case for much the RF does.

In 2018 there was a shocking incident in Louvain, Belgium, which led to the death of Sanda Dia. Those responsible received very light punishments for what was judged involuntary manslaughter. This was also widely discussed on Dutch television, including Dia's father who appeared in a popular evening show.

Big day for Amalia today, January 23. She has completed her General Military Training and received her baret today. Proud Queen Máxima was present.

Not the nicest congratulatory ritus, but it could be worse ;)

Her Royal Highness the Princess of Orange completed General Military Training (AMO) on January 23 and was promoted to corporal. The AMO is part of the program she is following at Defensity College.

Now that she has completed her AMO (General Training for Military Education), the Princess of Orange will wear a military uniform when working for the Ministry of Defence. She will continue her training and is currently working as a student assistant at the Defence Staff.

His Majesty the King previously appointed the Princess by Royal Decree to the reserve staff of the Armed Forces, effective September 30, 2025. She performs her duties without pay, and her study time is considered private.

Defensity College aims to offer students meaningful part-time jobs during their studies and to increase the visibility and connection between the armed forces and society. The program consists of various work placements, activities, events, and training courses. In this way, the program contributes to the personal, professional, and military development of the military student worker.

There has traditionally been a close bond between the Armed Forces and the Royal House. William of Orange was commander of the army; subsequent kings held supreme authority. Since the 1983 Constitution, supreme authority has rested with the government. King Willem-Alexander completed his military service in the Royal Netherlands Navy; he subsequently served in the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Within the Armed Forces, as king, he holds a special position and military capacity.

What’s the reasoning behind beer being poured on her new badges?

Nice to see Amalia complete her general military training. She started September 30th I believe.
" She will continue her training and is currently working as a student assistant at the Defence Staff."

So she continues? good for her

It is an initiation ritual/ sort of a baptism which apparently is normal in parts of the army. It symbolises that the recruit is accepted as part of the group now. The beer symbolises the shared ‘blood, sweat and tears’.

Very proud day for Maxima being there, and WA, watching the ceremony. And the other parents.

She should be happy she is not in commando training. From what I read, they get doused in beer enough they have to drink it out of their beret as part of theirs.

The chairperson of the Dutch national sports association is wondering whether Amalia could become an IOC-member in the future (Willem-Alexander joined the IOC when he was 30). The Netherlands hasn't had an IOC-member since 2018.

At the time there was criticism when Willem-Alexander was picked by the IOC over a candidate of the Dutch Olympic Comittee. The main ciritcism was that he was not an Olympic sporter [other candidates were] and had few qualifications other than being the crown prince.
By now it seems most members of the IOC are no former Olympians. And anything better than Camiel Eurlings of course [former minister and Dutch IOC member 2013-2018 who resigned after it became clear he physically abused his girlfriend].

I'd say that Ireen Wüst - as the second-most decorated female Winter Olympian in the world would be much more deserving.
