The Nobel Prize 2013 - 2025

Angela Merkel and her husband attend and are seated to the Table of Honour.
Table of Honour 2025
How lovely that they also include previous laureates! I noticed the Dutch laureate Ben Feringa (Chemistry, 2016) and his wife are also seated at the Table of Honour.

King Carl Gustaf always knows how to wear white tie for a man to perfection.

His brother in law Consul General Tord Magnuson does too, but he’s not attending this year.

That's weird. Why would Tord and princess Christina no longer be invited?!

Yes, that's weird. Maybe we hear more about that today.
It was also interesting, that the Marshal of the Realm Fredrik Wersäll always has a place at the Table of Honour, this year he wasn't placed there. This was his last Nobel ceremony as the Marshal of the Realm.

Crown Princess Victoria is once again a Nobel Prize winner, reusing a dress previously worn by Queen Silvia. In addition to the fact that the Crown Princess's fashion choice carries a history as the second time she has reused the Queen Mother's dress, it is also an exciting clothing choice in terms of fashion. Crown Princess Victoria is dotting one of the big trends of 2026 - white.

Aftonbladet's royal expert Jenny Alexandersson writes at her column among other things:
It strikes me that I am sitting in a room with 1,300 people, the majority of whom have dedicated their lives to science and research. The world's smartest minds are linked in a common breath this evening.
Celebrating science feels like an act of rebellion in a world seething with distrust and conspiracy theories.
Some may think it is a waste to gather people in the City Hall and provide them with food and drink worth millions of kronor. Parading royalty in front of the camera.
That is not how it should be seen. The Nobel banquet is an important statement. Alfred Nobel wanted to reward people who do great service to humanity. It is Sweden's, and science's, greatest showcase to the world.
The royal family has helped draw attention to the event since 1901.

Tord Magnuson to Svensk Damtidning:
– You don't go to parties if you're not invited. Everything has its time, says Tord Magnuson.
How come you and Princess Christina haven't received an invitation? You always go to the Nobel?
– Don't ask us. You could call it a Nobel pension.
Why Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson haven't been invited to this year's Nobel is unclear. Svensk Damtidning has contacted both the court and Nobel for comment – but no response.

That is doubly weird indeed.

My first thought was to wonder whether one or both of the Magnusons were or will imminently be linked to some scandal, but if that were the case, Mr. Magnuson would not have drawn attention to it with his own comments confirming they were not invited.

My second thought was to wonder if one or both Magnusons had gotten on the wrong side of someone with authority over the invitation list, but a personal dispute surely wouldn't cause the Marshal of the Realm to be excluded from the high table.

My third thought is to wonder whether perhaps there was a republican or monarchy critic in a position to influence the guest list this year, thus the pruning down of royal-adjacents. But Chris O'Neill was still seated at the table of honor.

It was strange not to see Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson at the Gala but I think its wiser to not answer these questions from nosey reporters.

Here are some additional photos from the Nobel Gala last night.

how wonderful Victoria reusing a dress previously worn by Queen Silvia! it is beautiful and I am glad it got recycled!

They have attended more rarely in recent years and was also absent last year…

If i would make a guess, i’d say its because they have begun to slow down and hinted that they no longer wants to recive an invitation… Princess Christina after all officially retired from her last remaining duties when she turned 80 (even though she has continued to show up here and there)

That would make sense in general but if so, Tord’s comments would be rather out of character as while truthful (they didn’t receive an invitation) they seem to cast a shadow on whoever is handling invitations.

Or are we interpreting his comments incorrectly and would it be perfectly normal as a factual observation in a conversation in Sweden?

Tord Magnuson's response to the question of "How come you and Princess Christina haven't received an invitation?" began with "Don't ask us". That sounds as if the couple either do not know the reason for their disinvitation, or know the reason but cannot publicly discuss it (which I don't think would be the case if they were uninvited by their own choice).

I wonder if Tord is only going public after two years of nonattendance because he first tried to work out the issue privately.

I read the article now… He does not answer it and tells the gossip journalist to ask the nobel foundation… As a swede i would interpret it as a kinder way of saying ”no comments” or ”mind your own business”…

However he also says ”we can call it nobel-retirement” and the article also refers to his comment last year ”Have you attended 48 times it is better to leave space for other guests. We are relaxing in front of the tv for a change”.

No clear answers but as it is the nobel foundation who is the host and not the royal family (although they are the guests of honour), i think they have decided to limit the invitations down to the King and Queen and their children with spouses.

Where is this dinner held?
The King's dinner for the Nobel laureates is held at the Royal Palace.
Traditionally the Royal Family gives first a small reception in Prince Bertil's apartment for the Nobel laureates and their respectives. The Royal Family and the Nobel Laureates then enter the Palace's ballroom, the White Sea Hall (Vita havet). The Royal family greets other invited guests who represented the Riksdag and government, the diplomatic corps, academies, research and science, the Nobel Foundation and others. The dinner is held at the Karl XI's Gallery.

The guest list
Among the guests are well known philanthropists, the Royal Family's close friends Barbro Osher (85) and Bernard Osher (98).

The Royal House published a short video from the dinner with fantastic music, Hugo Alfvén's Festspel:

And lady-in-waiting Harriet Bredelius wears the "normal" court dress - and her tiara. She came with Victoria's aide-de-camp, commander Jonas Forsmark.

Thank you Lady Finn for such a thorough explanation of the event. I had no idea that the court dresses were actual dresses or uniforms. I assumed they were a general term meaning style of dress like black tie, cocktail. It would be nice to have a thread about this, or maybe one exists?
The king seems to be enjoying himself!

Also I see Bettina Bernadotte on the guest list. I imagine she is a distant relationship. Is there a photo of her from the event?
Thank you

Countess Bettina is the second cousin of King Carl Gustaf. Here countess Bettina at the Nobel Banquet, so far I haven't seen a photo of her at the King's dinner yesterday.

The Nobel Prize has released the video of the Nobel Concert on December 8. The Concert begins with the King's song as usual. Professor Astrid Söderbergh Widding, Chair of the Board of the Nobel Foundation, sits beside the King. And the Marshal of the Realm Fredrik Wersäll and his wife Anna sit behind the King and Queen.

The leading lady court dress looks a lot better than the normal court dress imho.

Thank you for the photo of the Countess. Interesting tiara
FYI: Countess Bettina attends every year as the president of the Council for Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and Board Member.

Never heard that we would have a special court dress for ladies in leading positions at the swedish royal court…

If so why did the recently retired Mistress of the Robes Baroness Kirstine von Blixen Findcke who by far outranked Margareta Thorgren at the royal court always wear the usual court dress ?

Even The Queen’s lady in waiting who belongs to the Queen’s household comes before the information department in rank.

No, Margareta Nisser-Dalman, the Director of the Royal Collections, and Margareta Thorgren, the Director of the Press Department, wore these new court dresses first time at the King's dinner for the Nobel Laureates in 2016.

"The Mistress of the Robes, the First Lady of the Court, the ladies-in-waiting and female marshals now wear the new version of the court dress that was introduced in 1988. In the 2010s, a service dress was also introduced for female heads of offices."

Countess Bettina Bernadotte attended the Nobel Prize award ceremony with her stepson Valentin Rickert (Obviously he uses his mother's last name). Valentin is pursuing his doctorate at the University of Konstanz on narratives of climate change. To the King's dinner Bettina attended alone according to the guest list.

I read it as, and I have read it a couple of times, there are now two different Court dresses, for different groups within the Court.

The one introduced in the 80's for the traditional positions of the Court; The Mistress of the Robes, The Lady of the State (statsfrun, Head of the Queen's Household), Ladies-in-waiting, and female Marhals of the Court.

The new Court dress, introduced some years ago, on the other hand is intended for women at the Court, not belonging to the Household/Court of any member of the Royal Family, so to say more support function at the Court.

That is at least how I read it.

Victoria and Daniel at the recording of "Nobel Minds"/"Snillen spekulerar":

The Royal House:
Tonight the TV program "Snillen spekulerar" will be broadcast on SVT. During Nobel Week, in the presence of the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel, the TV recording took place in the Bernadotte Library at the Royal Palace.
The program brings together the Nobel laureates, this year they will have a conversation about learning, research in a global host and what it means to be human. The program is hosted by Lucy Hockings from BBC and the program is made in collaboration with BBC World.
Snillen spekulerar, or Nobel Minds as the program is called abroad, is a popular science roundtable discussion program and has been recorded and broadcast on Swedish television since the 1960s.

The program will be broadcasted on SVT2 and SVT Play this evening, link:

Interesting to see if Victoria gave a short welcoming speech in the beginning this year too as she did last year.

Here's still some very good photos from the Nobel Prize Award ceremony, banquet and the King's Dinner:

I just watched "Nobel Minds"/"Snillen spekulerar", it was extremely interesting. Victoria said a few words in the beginning of the program.
