On January 15th, Princess Akiko gave a lecture at the 3R1Z Joint New Year's Meeting of the Kyoto Rakuhoku Lions Club at ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto.

The attendee Yoichiro Akiyama thinks his good relationship with the chairperson of Nagakusa embroidery studio, which was was involved in Ofune Boko float restoration, was the reason he was seated at the same table as Princess Akiko. Akiyama was also tasked with giving a toast after her lecture. He was nervous about using honorific language properly and balancing consideration for the princess and club members. He woke up at 3am and could not sleep. The Imperial Household Agency asked attendees to refrain from sending personal greetings to Princess Akiko, taking photos and posting on social media.

On February 7th, Princess Akiko gave her final class for 3rd year students in the Tea Ceremony Department of Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chado. Her lecture was entitled "Feeling Close to Japanese Culture."

Students consulted with Kyoto confectioner Suetomi for custom sweets from Princess Akiko's Oxford memoir "Red and Blue Gown." The special sweets were named "Hanakoromo" inspired by the graduation gown. On March 4th, Princess Nobuko attended the 31st Women's Health and Work Style Forum 2025 - Women's Health Management Awards Ceremony at Nippon Press Center in Chiyoda, Tokyo. She serves as honorary president of the Women's Health and Menopause Association, which was founded in 1996 as an NPO. Princess Nobuko's connection dates back 19 years due to menopausal symptoms. From 2009, she trained and worked as a “women’s health counselor” to help others experiencing poor physical and mental health due to menopause, working phone support Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm.

She stopped women's health counseling after 7 years due to various reasons, including security, but Princess Nobuko continues to take phone calls from home between 5-9am to support those affected by the 2011 earthquake. Victims of the Kamamoto earthquake have also inquired for services.

At the forum, Princess Nobuko spoke about her experience from breast cancer, recommending knowledge of illnesses, knowing your own body and a partnership with the doctor. During breast cancer screening, her doctor usually repeatedly checked the left breast but this time, the doctor focused on the right side and Nobuko became suspicious. She gained insight into specialized medical fields and lack of coordination in care. Princess Nobuko credits and is thankful her studies at the association for better understanding and connecting with others.

Her cells were sent to Shizuoka Cancer Center for treatment research after surgery. The cancer was non-invasive outside but invasive inside. As an example of knowing one's body and working with the doctors, Nobuko explained choosing, with doctor consultation, for lower dosage radiation over 25 sessions instead of the common 16 sessions due to her sensitive skin. Same total radiation. She advocated for getting second opinions and the courage to choose a different hospital if the current provider is not right for the patient. In conclusion, Princess Nobuko said women living healthy and fulfilling lives will also contribute to the development of Japan. She cited her joy of cooking as an example, encouraged pursuing interests and activities will have positive effects.

That's quite the time commitment sustained over many years - equivalent to a full-time job in the first case. Is her counseling of menopausal women and earthquake survivors well known to the public? If not, then it must be driven by deep personal commitment, which is admirable.

On March 7th, Princess Yohko began a three-day visit to Mie Prefecture:

Do you know whether the visit was private or a part of her official duties? Either way, such an ancient shrine (even setting legend aside) seems quite worthy of an imperial visit.

On March 7th, Princess Akiko visited Koriyama Castle in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture. Earlier, she gave a special lecture "What Tradition Means" at a commemoration for the 300th anniversary since former Lord Yanagisawa Yoshisato entered Koriyama Castle. Hello Tatiana Maria! I remember - if I am not mistaken - that Princess Yohko's visits to Yasukuni shrine for the spring festival in April are not recorded as part of the official program. These are probably visits that she makes privately, or semi-officially.

Regarding her visit to Kashima Shrine, I think it is the same. It was the first time she participated, but she did it privately. No official announcements on the week's program.

Perhaps in part they want to prevent a large influx of people to the usually quiet shrines, although they still have visitors. I'm sure that if people knew that Princess Yohko was visiting a shrine and it was announced, people would flock to see her, perhaps creating too many crowds and disorganization (maybe).

On March 8th, Princess Akiko and her cultural organization Shinyusha held a lacquer workshop at Nogi Shrine in Minato, Tokyo. After a formal visit to the worship hall, they attended a lecture on lacquer history, practicality and applications by Tomoya Murose, director of the Meijiro Lacquer Art Culture Research Institute. Participants were blindfolded to compare differences of lacquer to other materials such as glass, plastic and wood. Next, Murose demonstrated applying lacquer and showed a box he spent a year creating, which he decorated with mother-of-pearl, maki-e and pearls. Nogi Shrine also specially exhibited a Nogi family heirloom, a stacked box bestowed by Empress Shoken, which Tomoya’s father Kazumi restored. Living National Treasure Kazumi Murose made a special appearance to give commentary.

Finally, participants could chose a design from peach, squirrel, rabbit or bear patterns to apply to a small plate. Peach was the most popular pattern. Princess Akiko chose rabbit. Some opted for the more difficult bear pattern and others drew their own design such as a fox or wrote their names. The application activity took an hour. The works will be left to dry at Murose's studio for several weeks and delivered to participants afterwards.

The lacquer workshop's participation fee will be donated to areas affected by the Noto earthquake.

Princess Akiko will host a special radio program of "All Night Nippon" in April for Nippon Broadcasting System's 70th anniversary.

"Princess Akiko's All Night Nippon Premium" will cover culture, Japanese art, her hobbies and life. Kabuki actor Nakamura Kankuro and rakugo performer Tatekawa Shinohachi will be guests. There will be a segment where Princess Akiko will answer questions submitted in advance from listeners of the show. Nippon Broadcasting System will air recordings of people connected to the Princess from its archives, such as her late father Prince Tomohito, who hosted "All Night Nippon" in 1975. Grandfather Prince Mikasa had also appeared on the radio show.

The decision on whether to broadcast live or record the 2-hour show is still underway, and the broadcast date will be announced at a later date. Director Ichiro Seo explained that after her book "Red and Blue Gown: Oxford Study Abroad Diary" became a bestseller, "our staff asked her to appear on the show, and she readily agreed."

President Maki Hiwara said, "It's hard to ask the Imperial family to do All Night Nippon so many times, but we made a genuine offer and it turned out to be a success, so we're very happy about it. It's rare that we get to hear the voices of the Imperial family directly, so we're grateful and it's a learning experience for us," and expressed her expectations, saying, "Even though she’s young, she’s established a life abroad, and I think she’s a very sensitive person who feels all sorts of things when she sees Japan today."

Looking forward to the interview. I appreciate your many posts and translations of quotes from Princess Akiko's past interviews and writings, and enjoy how she manages to be honest and interesting without crossing the line (in my opinion) into oversharing or inappropriateness for her role.

I wonder what Ms. Hiwara means by "It's hard to ask the Imperial family to do All Night Nippon so many times". Was the program repeatedly rejected for interviews by other royals?
