The King, the Royal Family and the Commonwealth

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It seems a rather small number of royals this year (not necessarily compared to last year of course when both the king and princess of Wales were absent due to illness). Would have expected Edward & Sophie as well. And doesn't Timothy usually attend as well?
I don't know about Edward or Tim but Sophie was in New York.

Hasn't Timothy been ill recently? That might explain his absence.
He had a torn ligament but he is already back attending engagements, see his own thread or joint engagements like the rugby match on Saturday.

Here are some more photos and a video of the Commonwealth Day Reception:

Today, March 11, King Charles planted a tree to celebrate the "achievements of The Queen's Commonwealth Canopy and in recognition of his longstanding commitment to environmental conservation and the enduring bond between the nations of the Commonwealth":

Oh how great would that be! A strong and firm statement to You Know Who and his cronies south of the border.

However imo it’s very unlikely as the notice given is much too short.

Global News, one of Canada's national television news outlets, reports that the federal government has invited the King to open the new parliament at the end of this month.

If the reporting is correct, I think it's likely to happen, as I don't think the invitation would be extended unless it had essentially been pre-negotiated. Richard Palmer reported last week that the Palace had been preparing for the possibility of a visit for either the opening of Parliament or for Canada Day.

The Prime Minister just confirmed in his press conference that the King will open the new parliament on the 27th, accompanied by the Queen.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Canada from Monday, May 26 to Tuesday, May 27.
The King and Queen will attend the State Opening of Canada's Parliament in Ottawa.

Will he open it (think QEII did a few times) or is that done not by the Monarch (someone representing him) there?

The Governor General normally opens the annual session of Parliament delivering the Speech from the Throne (Canada's equivalent to the King's Speech in the UK).

When the Sovereign is physically present in Canada, however, it is expected that he will open Parliament and deliver the Speech from the Throne himself. Keep in mind that, under Section 17 of the Constitution Act, 1867, there is "One Parliament for Canada" consisting of the King, the Senate, and the House of Commons. Furthermore, under Section 9, "The Executive Government and Authority of and over Canada" is declared to be vested in the King, so the agenda that is being announced to the Senators and the MPs in the Speech from the Throne is that of His Majesty's Government for Canada.

The King's presence at the state opening of the Canadian Parliament, reasserting His Majesty's sovereignty in and over Canada, is an evident message that is being sent to the President of the United States and other annexationist factions within the US government and the US Congress.

Terrific. This is wonderful news. Not just because there is a newly elected Govt and a new sense of unity in Canada since January, but because the sight of the King on his throne and reading a speech to Parliament will emphasise to the administration south of the border that Canada is a sovereign state and will never be ‘the 51st State of the US. ‘ I look forward to seeing this.

I agree a message is being sent to the United States. This is the first time a British monarch has opened Canadian parliament since 1977. When the Queen was here opening Parliament, she opened it wearing a white gown and tiara. What would we expect Charles would wear?

Something to accommodate the traditional beaver and loon wreath, perhaps… :canflag:

I expect he gets his choice of either black morning dress with orders or Guards uniform with orders?

(No idea, just tossing things out.)

He is a very snappy dude sartorially so I’m sure he’ll clean up fine.

Unless they upgrade it to white tie, i expect civil day dress for everyone, except for KCIII and the military aides who will likely be in uniform.

A message is definitely being sent. And it’s deserved imo. Though- I think (?) it’s more directed at Donald Trump. I’d like to think the majority of Americans- no matter who they voted for- aren’t this deluded and arrogant…and some other choice words. IE- they don’t need the message. And I hope most Canadians know that too.

Or maybe it’s just me not liking being lumped in with all this. :(

They probably aren’t. On the other hand, most Americans can’t name the capital of Canada or the head of our government, never have been able to, and don’t think that’s particularly important. (Whereas Canadians are hyperaware of what happens in the States.)

So the one-way street doesn’t lend much respect to Canada as a completely separate country. The guy at the top doesn’t help, but ordinary Americans’ benevolent disinterest and neglect doesn’t, either.

So the King of Canada is opening the Canadian Parliament. That's a smart move by Mr Carney, moving the king on the North American chess board.

I hope they'll be lots of pomp & bunting & the mounties of course. Maybe some moose? Gotta make it as Canadian as possible.:D

It's a shame it won't take place in the actual senate as the parliament building is under long term restoration although the temporary senate chamber is quite good looking considering it's not designed to be permament. And the building itself is stunning.

Surely the visit will last longer that 26-27th , it's a long way to go for 48 hours

I was hoping so - given their age it seems a long way to travel for such an express visit (I get the importance in the message it sends regarding the sovereignty of Canada in the current climate) but a week long visit seems more appropriate and see more of the locals and more places
