From the BBC article.

Jason Knauf, a former royal aide who worked for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as well as the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, has been recognised for his service to the monarchy by being named a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO).

It is significant to note that the RVO, unlike for example the Order of the British Empire, is in the personal gift of the monarch, rather than being awarded on the recommendation of the government.

A couple that stood out for me from the "celebrity" list were Rachel Riley for her work in Holocaust education and David Harewood for his Black and British documentaries. Obviously Brian May etc etc. Also nice to see some of Princess Anne's aides getting recognition.

Agreed. That is notable. Very nice to see JK on the list. Speaks volumes.

I mean he's more than the person who provided proof for Associated News. He was a high level aide who did a good job (And apparently was the one who realised and was willing to start doing something about the fact staff had no recourse against "principals"). And worked a lot for The Royal Foundation.

Nevertheless the fact that he was given an order by the King's own wishes is significant.

Oh yes. He absolutely is. His entire resume is very impressive.

The 2024 New Years Honours List has been released.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-67834723

Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis and bestselling writer Jilly Cooper are among those recognised in the 2024 New Year Honours list.
Actress Emilia Clarke is named MBE alongside England goalkeeper Mary Earps, while captain Millie Bright and singer Leona Lewis become OBEs.
Ex-rugby league players Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield become CBEs for raising awareness of motor neurone disease.
Founder of pub chain JD Wetherspoon, Tim Martin, receives a knighthood.
Eavis also receives a knighthood and becomes Sir Michael, while Cooper, now Dame Jilly, is given a damehood in the honours list - which recognises the achievements of hundreds of people across the UK.

The 2025 New Year's Honours list has been released:

Knighthoods for Gareth Southgate and Stephen Fry, Mayor of London Said Khan.

Actress Sarah Lancashire is appointed CBE as are Carey Mulligan and Alan Titchmarsh.

There are OBEs for four former sun-postmasters for their campaign against wrongful prosecutions carried out by the Post office (as dramatised in the Mr Bates vs the Post Office drama). The journalist who broke the story for Computer Weekly, Rebecca Thompson is also awarded an OBE.

The full honours are available in the London Gazette and shows the honours awarded to the Royal Victorian Order which is awarded personally by Charles for services to the royal household.

It includes an MVO (member of Victorian Order) for William's former equerry Rob Dixon (interestingly enough he is listed as "lately Equerry to the Prince & Princess of Wales")
and Sarah Troughton, the Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire is made a Dame Commander of the Victorian Order - she is one of Camilla's six "Queen's Companions" but it is also entirely normal for Lord-Lieutenants to receive a knighthood or be made a dame. It also shows a MVO for the brilliantly titles "Country Dresser to the Queen, and Assistant House Manager, Raymill"

As ever, lots of deserving recipients as well as controversy over others.

I wonder when/if ever we will see a reform of the honours system.

:previous: the Mayor of London ... no comment. They should either reform or scrap altogether.

The BBC are reporting that David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood!
Its believed that King Charles III’s birthday honours list will be announced next week.
David Beckham set to be awarded knighthood in King Charles' birthday honours list
Well, I'm delighted about this! As a United fan, I can say that David Beckham has brought a lot of joy into my life :) . I definitely can't say that about all the politicians and civil servants who get handed honours. And he does do a lot for charity, including the King's Foundation.

It will be interesting to see who else makes the Kings Birthday Honours list!

Also honoured were :
TV Presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman both awarded MBE's
Authors Pat Barker and Jacqueline Wilson both have been made a Dames
UK singer Elaine Page has been made a Dame
UK Actor Gary Oldman has been made a Knight
UK Singer and Musician Roger Daltrey CBE has been made a Knight
Kings Birthday Honours: How does the UK honours system work?

The New Years Honours List has been revealed today

Actor Idris Elba is knighted and England women's football coach Sarina Wiegman is made an honorary dame in the New Year Honours.

Figure skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are given a damehood and knighthood respectively, while there is also recognition of the Red Roses winning the women's rugby union World Cup.

There are 1,157 recipients in this year's list with Wiegman and several of her Lionesses honoured after their victory in the European Championships last summer.

The most interesting awards IMO are those to the Royal Victorian Order.

Celia Innes, Senior Lady in Waiting to The Princess Royal is made Dame Commander

Charlotte Manley, Chapter Clerk to the College of St George at Windsor Castle (and once Private Secretary & Treasurer to former Prince Andrew 2001-2003) is also made a Dame Commander

William Hague (former Leader of Conservative APrty and Foreign Secretary) is made Commander for services to the Royal Foundation & Nature Conservation

William and Catherine's Nanny Maria Borrallo is awarded the Royal Victorian Medal (Silver)

There are also a number of awards to people who helped during the Royal Tour of Australia.

Excellent news about Charlotte Manley: the Manley family have been prominent in Windsor for several generations.

I would have thought that Maria Borrallo deserved more than the Royal Victorian Medal - MVO for example. I am thinking of all the 'Lady Clerks' [basically secretaries in the 'typist' sense rather than 'private sense'] who used to be awarded MVOs after about 10 years' service.

It’s very possible she will receive more honors when William is monarch

Also nice to see the 95 year old Roy Clarke (writer of some of the best tv-series, like Last of the Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances) finally getting knighted.

Expected to see the recently retired Chief of the Defense Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin becoming a Knight Grand Cross. Though i’m a bit surprised he is made a GBE instead of GCB.

The Royals tend to give out awards within the RVO and its associated medals in quite a structured way with higher awards and grades being given upon successive service through the years.
If we take, for example, Dame Mary Morison, Lady in Waiting to HLM Queen Elizabeth II from 1960-2022 she was awarded Commander of RVO in 1970, Dame Commander in 1982 then Dame Grand Cross in 2013, others such as Lady Susan Hussey were given awards in similar time frames after similar lengths of time.
So I don't think Maria's award is a sign of anything other than she has served X amount of years and so is due it. I would suspect in time she will be given "promoted" higher within the RVO but already the Wales no doubt show their apprecitation for all she does in other ways.
