On Mainau two weeks ago:
Working together for spring: Our gardeners are currently planting thousands of tulip bulbs in the meadows and hillsides along Spring Street, receiving enthusiastic support from colleagues in all departments. Mainau's managing directors, count Björn Bernadotte and Michael Roensch, were also there, fully committed – true teamwork for a colorful sea of blossoms in 2026!

Swedish Christmas tradition, singing, and candlelight: On Friday, December 12, and Saturday, December 13, the traditional Swedish Lucia Festival will take place in the Christmas Garden on Mainau Island. Between 18:30 and 19:00, the singing of "Luciatåg" will fill the Palm House – a radiant celebration of light amidst the winter darkness. Guests of the Christmas Garden on Mainau Island are warmly invited to attend the Lucia Festival and enjoy a moment of quiet beauty and Swedish Christmas tradition.
A member of the Bernadotte family opens the performance and introduces the history and meaning of the Lucia Festival.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte's husband Philipp Haug as a qualified agricultural engineer, is responsible for the experimental vineyard on the Mainau Island. Not far from the famous rose gardens, 800 grapevines were planted again in 2006. Haug relies on fungus-resistant (Piwi) varieties such as Johanniter, Solaris, and Monarch, which "help to reduce the need for plant protection to a certain extent."

Countess Bettina Bernadotte attended the Nobel Prize award ceremony with her stepson Valentin Rickert (Obviously he uses his mother's last name). Valentin is pursuing his doctorate at the University of Konstanz on narratives of climate change.

The Mainau Island yesterday in Facebook about Countess Bettina Bernadotte:
25 years full of ideas and dedication: With the departure of Countess Bettina Bernadotte from Mainau's management, a defining chapter comes to an end. In a new constellation with Count Björn Bernadotte and Michael Roensch, our journey continues, because the vision remains: Together we want to grow, seize new opportunities, and actively shape the future. To mark this new chapter for Mainau, we take a look back at some special moments. Let's take a look back at the last quarter-century on Mainau Island and reminisce with us about some milestones, such as:
1. The passing of the torch from Countess Sonja to Countess Bettina and Count Björn ...
5. The passing of the torch from Countess Bettina to Count Björn and Michael Roensch - nice and touching video!

The legendary Coca-Cola Christmas truck made a stop at the Christmas Garden on Mainau Island. Managing Directors count Björn Bernadotte and Michael Roensch took a photo with the truck.

I do wonder why Bettina is stepping down. Looking for ‘new challenges’ sounds rather vague and doesn’t make much sense if the alternative is continuing a family heritage.

Co-operation Bodensee Philharmonie and Mentor Germany
What moves young people today? What worries, dreams and wishes do they carry within them? The stage program “wir_jetzt_hier”, which will be performed on October 7 and 8, 2026 at the Bodenseeforum Konstanz, explores these questions.
Countess Bettina Bernadotte, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Mentor Foundation Germany:
“This works particularly well when young people and adults work together on a project and create something together. We are delighted that Oliver Wnuk, together with filmmaker Teresa Renn and theater educator Saskia Junggeburth, has taken on the project management. Together with the teachers of the Geschwister-Scholl-School and volunteer mentors, an intergenerational project is being created – entirely in keeping with the Mentor idea: to foster positive contact between young people and adults outside the parental home.”

The European Cultural Forum Mainau has had an eventful 2025:
With concerts under palm trees, in the wine cellar of the historic gatehouse, and in the baroque White Hall, the European Cultural Forum Mainau offered unique spaces for exceptional musical experiences in 2025.
At the long-established Anneliese Rothenberger Competition in May, young vocal talents impressed the distinguished jury with their skill and stage presence.
More extraordinary musical experiences await in the coming year. Jazz under the Palms returns with three concerts – for connoisseurs and newcomers alike.

Count Christian Bernadotte is the President of the European Cultural Forum Mainau and Countess Bettina's husband Philipp Haug the 1st Vice President.

On January 5, the Christmas Garden on Mainau Island closed its gates for its fifth season, once again welcoming more guests than the previous year. For the first time, the magical mark of over 100,000 tickets sold was reached. As an event format, the Christmas Garden on Mainau Island thus underscored its importance as a tourism driver during the winter season for Mainau Island, the Lake Constance region, and beyond.
Mainau Managing Director count Björn Bernadotte: “The very positive development of the Christmas Garden Mainau Island confirms our shared path and impressively demonstrates what is possible when strong partners work together towards a common goal. We sincerely thank Christmas Garden Deutschland GmbH and C²Concerts GmbH for their commitment, professionalism, and excellent collaboration – together we have created an outstanding foundation for future projects.”

Mainau GmbH/Mainau Island has updated its website after countess Bettina Bernadotte stepped down as managing director in the end of 2025.

Count Björn Bernadotte, Managing Director of Mainau GmbH and Spokesperson of the Management Board
The eldest son of Sonja and Lennart Bernadotte, born in 1975, has been Managing Director of Mainau GmbH since 2011. Since 2025, he has jointly managed the company with Michael Roensch. Prior to this, he completed a commercial apprenticeship and a degree in social pedagogy in Rorschach, Switzerland. He applies the knowledge he gained there not only to his work as Managing Director of Mainau GmbH but also to his role as Managing Director of the non-profit Lennart Bernadotte Foundation. Count Björn Bernadotte lives in the baroque palace on the flower island of Mainau.

Experiencing nature is her passion: Countess Bettina Bernadotte, born in 1974, is a board member of the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation and wants visitors to the flower island in Lake Constance to find relaxation through close contact with nature...

New job for countess Bettina Bernadotte:

At the suggestion of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the Federal Government appointed yesterday countess Bettina Bernadotte as one of the eight new members of The German Council for Sustainable Development for the next three years. Seven members continue their work on the Council.

Eight new members have been appointed to the Council for Sustainable Development. This was announced by Chancellor Merz during the cabinet meeting.

The Council advises the Federal Government on issues of sustainability policy. It acts in this capacity as an independent entity, and since 2001 its members have been appointed every three years by the Federal Government. The Council consists of 15 public figures, comprising individuals from civil society, the business sector, the scientific community and the political arena. The Council also carries out its own projects aimed at advancing the topic of sustainability in practical terms. In addition, it helps shape topically focused momentum within policy and societal dialogue. The Council is supported in its activities by an administrative office based in Berlin.

Mayor Uli Burchardt and the City of Konstanz congratulate countess Bettina Bernadotte:
"A powerful voice from Konstanz for a sustainable future!
Congratulations from me and the city of Konstanz on this wonderful appointment! The appointment of Countess Bettina Bernadotte to the German Federal Government's Council for Sustainable Development highlights what has distinguished our region for decades: sustainability is not just a buzzword here, but a lived reality.
For many years, @inselmainau has demonstrated how sustainable business practices work in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – from environmental standards and gastronomy to long-term responsibility through its foundation structure. The fact that this experience is now being incorporated into political consultations nationwide is a tremendous opportunity – not only for Berlin, but also for Lake Constance!"

Countess Bettina cannot yet estimate how much work the The Council for Sustainable Developmen twill have to do – nor how often she will have to go to Berlin for it. (..)

On March 4, the German Federal Government awarded Mainau GmbH €300,000 in funding from its special monument preservation program for the renovation of Mainau Castle.
Managing Director count Björn Bernadotte: “We are delighted about the support of the Federal Government for this valuable task: the preservation of the unique Baroque ensemble. Preserving the castle and church for our guests and for future generations is a great, responsible and at the same time fulfilling task”.
Mainau Island has been a protected historical monument as a whole since 2003. Besides the park and gardens, the Baroque ensemble of Mainau Castle and St. Mary's Church is a central attraction on the island and has also been designated a "cultural monument of special significance." Preserving the historical fabric in accordance with monument protection regulations requires sensitive and often costly measures. Since 2016, these preservation efforts have focused on the roof structure and exterior of Mainau Castle. Extensive renovations have been underway at the Castle. Currently, all the plumbing and electrical systems in the south wing of the castle are being replaced.
