The Invictus flag was flown from the Sydney Harbour Bridge - and other landmarks, schools, military barracks - to raise awarness of the event here in October.

Members of the Australian team did the Bridge Climb.

Maybe Harry and Meghan will have a go when they're here.

(I've done it, it's worth doing. Not hard, but a bit scary when you emerge from under the roadway amongst all the vehicles whizzing past - but totally safe of course.)

I imagine Harry and Meghan trying to do the bridge climb might be a bit of a security and logistics nightmare. Just trying to accommodate the press alone might result in having to shut down part of the bridge.

I was thinking they'd do it more as a private experience, than as an opportunity for the media Fros.

But even if it was official, there is an enormous amount of parkland under the bridge approach where photos/videos could be taken from.

A few thousand people could fit in that area - and no traffic involved.

Traffic on the bridge is un-hindered by climbers - climbers go constantly day and night, in large groups.

Busy days can have six or seven groups on the bridge at any one time, groups of twenty or so.

It's been a big business in Sydney for several years now.

(And no more of a security risk than the usual walkabouts amongst members of the public in the street.)

I hope they do a few less traditional things while here.

Bathurst wants them to drive around Mt Panorama - a car racing track. I hope they do.
 
Please note - Mt Panorama is only a car racing track during two weeks of the year - when the bike races and again the car races are on. The rest of the time it is a normal road with normal road rules applying.

I lived in Bathurst for many years and did my driving test there. You always knew you were in with a chance of getting it when the police officer (yes - when I did my test in rural NSW the tests were undertaken by cops not by people from the RTA) asked you to drive up Mt Panorama 'the wrong way' - in other words up through the 'sssss' rather than down them. Hill starts in the 'ssssss' are a lot of fun.

Other than during race week it is a normal two way road with many people living up there along with many businesses. A lot of people, not from Bathurst, think it is a race-track all year round rather than only for two or so weeks a year.

Manly was the beach William and Kate visited - and in the seat of who was then the Prime Minister.

Bondi is being touted as where Harry and Meghan will visit - the beach in the seat of the current Prime Minister.

(And I think this will happen, as there has been great rivalry between these two politicians. I can't see the current one not getting the same show out there.)
 
Assuming he is still the PM by then - after the events of this morning he may not even be PM next week.

For anyone who doesn't know the Liberal Party (our party in government federally at the moment) had a leadership vote this morning and the sitting PM won - but 38 members of his own party voted against him and only 45 voted for him. Based on past history the challenger will probably try again in a month or so and will do so with enough votes to oust the sitting PM so it is possible that by the time the Invictus Games begins we will have a different PM to the one we have now.

I notice that the promotion is based in the eastern suburbs of Sydney - don't assume that this promotion is happening across the city. I have seen none where I am and on asking my colleagues and friends none even know what they are let alone that Sydney is hosting them. I do live in a highly multicultural area who don't relate to a lot of the British traditions of Australia anyway which may also affect their lack of knowledge about the Invictus Games.

I know when they are on but not which venues are being used - that isn't being advertised very well and certainly not in my local area which is why I enjoy reading SunLion's posts - so I can find out what is being said in the wealthy parts of Sydney rather than the working class area where I live.

The interesting thing about this visit is that it's a combination of a charity organization visit with an official visit. They'll be events just on behalf of IG, but also official events mixed in. I'll be interested to see how the scheduling and events work when they are in Australia. More information will probably be released next month or early October.
 
The Invictus organization has just thanked one of Sydney's High Schools for purchasing one thousand tickets to the games.

Baulkham Hills High School is going to attend five days of events.

The Education Department and the Premier and Cabinet of NSW have combined to help promote the games, so maybe more schools will be involved by the time things kick off in a few more months -

I am just so over the moon at how involved and how much attention is being done in the lead up to the Invictus Games in Sydney. It seems like the entire country just about is gearing up for it and supporting it and just plain can't wait for it all to happen.

Now *that* is what I call backing a charitable event. Hats off to the Aussies!!! ??

Yes Osipi, it seems to me to be getting a lot of official support - and that is wonderful for the participants and their families.

I like that schools are involved - and our national broadcaster, the ABC.

I hope it is a big, big success for everyone, not least Harry.

And for all the people involved in actually staging it.

As it is still some time off, I'm expecting more and more coverage, announcements etc. as we get closer and closer.

I read that five hundred people participated in the official opening of the Manly "Walk and Talk" project, so that got good support.

And I've seen video of people exchanging their coins for the Invictus ones, but I couldn't post the link.

A lot of goodwill is building I think.

And it's just been announced today that David Beckham is the official ambassador for the Sydney games, so that will lead to more publicity no doubt.

So am I. Many more details to come of course. I'm hoping to see some events and for good weather as well, though the fact it's not being held in the summer months is a bonus.
 
I went to some events in Toronto last year & had the best time. Awesome athletes, true warriors! There was also good TV coverage & full internet streaming, so hopefully there’ll be similar this year in Australia.

And so it grows. From one little acorn of an idea from a veteran himself. That one seed seems to have grown into an immense forest of might oaks and spreading its branches in so many different places.

I do hope that Harry is kept informed of all these wonderful things that are cropping up (it seems daily) in relation to the Sydney Invictus Games. This has to be a sense of immense pride and joy for Harry knowing that something he wanted to start has gained so much momentum over the years that its effects are affecting the entire globe and its service personnel all over for the better.

We've always known the term "lest we forget" when it comes to our fighting forces that protect and serve our freedoms but I think too with things like the Invictus Games and Walking with the Wounded and other various programs for returning soldiers, we're also remembering the words "we won't forget what you've done for us".

Thanks so much Sun Lion for keeping us so up to date with the lead up to the Invictus Games down under. Each report you give reminds me of just how important the work is that this organization does.

Here's a heart-warming report on the wonderful ladies of the Queensland RSL who have been busy collecting fabric, and stitching laundry bags for the Invictus Games participants.

Designed with Australian themes, these women have been working for a year to create these bags, so laundry can be done in bulk.

Other states are involved and the aim is to create five hundred - one for each athlete.

What a great momento for them to take home.

I hope all the people quietly working behind the scenes to add to this event get noticed, and their effforts appreciated.

Wow! Thank you for posting, Sun Lion! That’s amazing! It’s stories like this that still makes me believe in mankind despite all the turbulent things in the world.
 
Maybe Harry and Meghan are going to be staying in that lovely Harbourside mansion when here in Sydney.

Victoria Barracks - in the same area - is to be the Invictus Games headquarters during the games.

And nearby is the Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law, which may explain the tour tie-in with Fiji and Tonga.

This is wonderful news. Of course we know that Mary is a native Australian and putting these two couples together are going to be a powerhouse draw for the Invictus Games in Sydney.

It seems like Harry and Fred got along quite well on his visit not too long ago to Denmark. Perhaps one day Denmark will hold the Invictus Games themselves. :D
 
This will be the first meeting for Meghan of European royalty. As the future king and queen of Denmark I think Harry and Meghan will be expected to bow and curtsy to them. The protocol police will be out in full force but I think Meghan will nail it.

Doubt it. Frederick is a future monarch, but his title is Prince right now.

Given that Harry has no relation to speak of with the continental royals it is unlikely that they spend their time visiting people he hardly ever met.

If he would like to meet people in the same position as he is in (i.e. grandchild of a European monarch by the heir but not in direct line to the throne), he could go and visit prince Sverre Magnus of Norway, prince Oscar of Sweden or one of prince Christian of Denmark's or prince Joseph-Wenzel vuz Liechtenstein's younger siblings - the latter including the only other adults in the bunch.

I think jacqui is right on this. Both Harry ahd Meghan and the CP couple of Denmark are relatively of equal status as things stand right now. When they're together at the games, I seriously doubt any of them will want to stand on formalities and concentrate why they're there together.

It would be different if this was more of a state occasion and Fred was representing his mother, Queen Margrethe II.
 
I should clarify that while I don’t believe there will be curtsy and bow, I’m not going to be shocked if the break protocol articles come out and try to shame Meghan. In fact, I would bet on it.
