The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Family, News and Events 10: August 2024 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Harry and Meghan (and fans) have complained about the limited coverage of the Invictus Games and of the athletes competing. The explanation from ITV associates is below, such as it is. Zoning delays and timing problems. That is not the Sussexes’ fault.

Meghan has now left the IG (yesterday) to return to their young children, so there won’t be any more appearances by her.

And, Meghan is Prince Harry’s wife (she has been for nearly seven years now) as well as the mother of his two children. They are happy together.

Ridiculous to complain. It wouldn't get the viewers. Main TV channels now only show the BIG sporting events. There isn't the audience. It actually has nothing to do with Harry. I'm not sure it will be different when it is held in Birmingham.

It needs media attention, which would lead to viewers watching the tv coverage. I wonder if there is any mileage in Invictus becoming an element within the Paralympics or the Olympics. They would be swept along with the media attention.

Not the olympics. I couldn't even tell you what channel the Paraolympics were on this year. It was big when it was held in London but really after two weeks of Olympics its done. Similarly couldn't tell you when the special olympics are. To be honest if it isn't BIG or football most sporting things don't get coverage.

But might Harry & Meghan actually like the idea of Invictus being incorporated into the Paralympics or the Warrior Games? That might mean the attention shifts to the actual participants.

My guess would indeed be the Warrior games would be the best fit, because it has the same participant base.
There are many sportsevents for a specific subset of sportspeople, like the University Games (for students/people who are still in school), World Masters Athletic Championships (just for athletics) for people age 35 and older, and reality is that although always fun to watch if you happen to know people competing, but the coverage will not be on the same level as with Olympics.
And imagine all the smaller events that are being held across the world and we don't even know about.
Paralympics are starting to get more attention nowadays, but even the Special Olympics are very rarely broadcast somewhere.

I can imagine if you're the patron for an event like Harry is, you'd like more coverage, but it's for such a niche target participant base that it's unlikely to happen.
Harry should be realistic and have it be what it is, a great way for disabled military persons to compete and meet with others from around the world.

But as a royal he was almost guaranteed continued coverage. You haven't got your in to the broadcasters now. He does need to get realistic. It's unlikely to get any coverage in a few years.

Invictus athletes already can participate in the Paralympics if they qualify for it, as those are open to all disabled people, not just military ones.
Warrior Games maybe, but if Harry was looking to do that, why start up Invictus in the first place and not get in touch with the organisation of Warrior Games to expand those.. ofcourse, the Warrior Games may not be interested in expanding, it's not always 'what Harry wants Harry gets' :flowers:

Harry 'star power' is still directly linked to his royal connections imo (and the love people have for the memory of his mom), the longer he is away from royal life and people who actually remember Diana are getting older and fewer, the more it will fade.
As mere celebs H&M don't seem to have found a way to be a 'sure thing' for A-list celebrity status based on their own merit yet.

Why should they? They haven't shown enough talent. They thought they were bigger than the show because they were popular members of the show. Unfortunately it's all about the show.

Unfortunately the interest and viweship in the Paralympics is not as high as the Olympics.

Even the Olympics are fading in popularity. Viewing numbers keep declining.
Very expensive to put on, and for me more professional. Didn’t we just love the under dog finishing 3 laps behind the winner or the swimmer who was minutes behind the winner. That has all gone, a lot of them are basically more professional than others.

The olympics still gets huge viewing figures. Obviously in particular in the time zone in which they are held. Summer more than winter...in certain countries it's probably reversed.

It was just a thought for discussion as how to improve the visibility of Invictus.

My community hosts water-sports events for disabled veterans every year. There was a money scandal with a guy fronting the Wounded Warriors group a few years back. It is now a more grassroots effort without the WW input.

Who paid for the Sussex hotel stay and the private jets?

I was finally able to find the time to watch the Netflix Polo series- that cost me a lot of time to find! I watched with fascination as I had no idea that the world of Polo was such a small and capital-intensive one. Huge villas in Florida, private helicopters and stables with multiple horses point to a sport for the ‘Happy Few’ that should interest those who watch shows like ‘White Lotus’. Prince Harry appeared in an episode that featured fundraising efforts for Sentebale, his African charity. Clearly, people with serious funding practice polo so that charity partnerships with this sport do well. A fascinating series that deserves more viewers; such people rarely speak to the press so that presumably Prince Harry was granted access. Worth the watch.

Have you read the Jilly Cooper "bonkbuster" book "Polo"? Not to be taken too seriously, but it does give an insight into that world. Rupert Campbell Black is supposedly based on Andrew Parker Bowles.

The Duchess of Sussex today shared news about her new brand "As ever":
