The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Family, News and Events 10: August 2024 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Harry is really in good form among these veteran competitors. It’s clear he loves being there with them and his heart is really in the IG. It’s terrific to see these gallant competitors beating the odds.

Tubing looks like quite good fun, if a little bit scarey too! Meghan was a good sport for trying it, though. And now she’s left to go home.

Hello! :) I am a long-time Royal Forums reader (5+ years!) but this is my first post. I have to say, I'm horrified by this Invictus Markle show. That appears to be what the Invictus Games, which is a worthy cause, has become. Now this tubing video? What about the veterans who are competing?[.....]hopefully the rest of this event will be focused on the athletes who are competing. I was happy for both of the Sussexes when they married, and was so thrilled that Harry found love after everything he'e been through, but both have left me not only disappointed by appalled. It's a shame all around.

Harry and Meghan (and fans) have complained about the limited coverage of the Invictus Games and of the athletes competing. The explanation from ITV associates is below, such as it is. Zoning delays and timing problems. That is not the Sussexes’ fault.

Meghan has now left the IG (yesterday) to return to their young children, so there won’t be any more appearances by her.

And, Meghan is Prince Harry’s wife (she has been for nearly seven years now) as well as the mother of his two children. They are happy together.

I live on Vancouver Island, and I would barely know the games were on, if I didn't follow royal news. I saw the piece about Eby's speech, and some news shows have done brief blurbs about Harry and Meghan, but there's been nothing about the actual competition at all. There is no livestream available in Canada or the US (according to the IG website) and the only TV coverage I could find for the week is a one hour slot on a premium sports channel tomorrow morning. I had expected it to be covered reasonably well here, because it's a local event, but apparently not.

Well, that is very disappointing. However, ITV’s lack-lustre deal wasn’t satisfactory either. Nevertheless, the next IG is pencilled in for Birmingham UK in 2027. It will be interesting to see what coverage IG gets and what the BBC, ITV or any others propose to show of it on their sports broadcasts at that time.

Apart from Wimbledon, the World Cup, the Euros and the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, the BBC and ITV don't show much sport during the daytime on weekdays. Diamond League athletics gets shoved on the "on demand" red button. Most sports coverage is now on Sky Sports and TNT/Eurosport. I don't know whether or not someone from the Invictus Games approached them about the TV rights, but they don't seem to be doing a very good job with publicity.

An amazing coincidence that a Backgrid photographer just happened to be around at that exact time to picture Meghan as she came off her eco-friendly private jet in Santa Barbara.

The problem is that media companies are businesses like any other and they need to be seen to make money for the shareholders. I do not know how these contracts work, but maybe there was not enough revenue to be gained. From what I see the games are not even being reported on the news bulletins.
The competitors and their families appear to have a good time and enjoy the experience but unfortunately that is not translating to the wider world.
The profile of the games and the individual competitors need to be raised.

Absolutely. They're far too much in the background.

Any sponsors will want their name to be out there, and it is not happening, that could have an impact for further games.
As I said in an earlier post I am not sure how contracts work, but I would have thought a media company from the country they are based in would deliver to the rest of the world.
Maybe another option could be Netflix , Disney or maybe Paramount.
Harry has contacts maybe he could make that work for the next games.

I agree there should be more coverage. There isn't even anything in our papers about the games!

We got a few pictures of Harry and Meghan, but the only place where I saw anything about the contestants was on the Royal British Legion website, which isn't really somewhere that most people look.

To be fair, Paralympic has always got significantly less coverage than Olympic. And considering IG is for wounded veterans, it's even more exclusive crowd than Paralympic. It's a good cause, but let's be honest, from business perspective, there's no money there.

Duchess of Sussex shared a photo and message to mark Valentine's Day.

Now there’s a story on her instagram account where the children can be partially seen. No red hair in sight for either of them.

Small pet peeve irritation of mine: I really don´t appreciate this trend among influencers and now royals (Eugenie did it too) of using their children for social media engagement but without actually showing them. Either you show them or you don't... I can understand it very well why they want to keep the children's privacy and-or do not want to monotize them. But then simply don't show them. We really don't need to see a hand, a foot or some hair.

Just saw a story on the news here - some Invictus athletes from Nigeria were apparently refused entry to Canada. The Nigerians are understandably angry, saying Canada can 'go to hell'.

No word yet as to why the visas were refused. Very unfortunate, all round.

I am not the least bit surprised. Canada probably has more than enough condemning info on these people. The problem in Nigeria is not only the terrorists but even the government forces who have committed war crimes.

If anybody's interested in the situation in Nigeria, this is a good recap:

I wonder if only aim to post this short video with not so visible children was to " steal" public attention from HArry still involved in Invictus GAmes.... Or perhaps to simply be in media because of her upcoming culinary show.... Or perhaps both....

Your sentiments are shared by many in the TRF community. There was a lot of enthusiasm and support for Harry & Meghan when they first married. It is a pity that they have made the choices that they have. It is especially sad to see the Invictus Games, which could become Harry's proudest achievement, be milked for pointless PR for H&M.

I am sure there may be a strong element of truth in this. There is a show to promote, jam to sell. And Meghan always seems to like to make announcements when attention is diverted away from her, in this case by Harry at Invictus.
