D. Duarte Pio, pretender to the former throne of Portugal, was awarded the Heritage Award for Peacemaker by the Sino-Phil Asia International Peace Awards Foundation.

He was recognized for his contribution to Timor-Leste's independence and for his charitable work over the past few decades in the Portuguese-speaking world. Duarte Pio has been a long-time supporter of East Timor's self-determination since the early years of Indonesian occupation.

The awards ceremony took place on Monday in Macau, at the Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau hotel.
