Breaking News:
Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican has announced.

Statement:
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

RIP

I am so upset at this news, and yet I am glad that he is no longer in any pain or discomfort. The ‘People’s Pope’ is soon to be in heaven among the angels. And on this important Holy week! A very humble and humane Pontiff. May he rest in peace.

With the very last of his energy, he wanted to be there for his people one last time, on the biggest day of the year for the church….

Then God came and ended his suffering forever and brought him home…

Despite not being a roman catholic myself i can honestly say that i admired this pope.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Message from the very catholic Grand Duke of Luxembourg

Statement from the very catholic King and Queen of the Belgians.

Good for him, he has been on his last journey on earth for some time now. I am glad that he could do one of the most important rites of the church in person and passing away at Easter is not bad for a pope.
RIP, Franziskus was always very authentic and loved around the globe.
I hope for a younger pope now who won't be struggling with health problems in the next years.

Very sad news this morning but not unexpected.

While not Catholic myself I had a lot of respect for a man who never shied away from speaking his mind regarding the vulnerable and oppressed.

I wonder in this situation do Vatican representatives contact his family prior to announcing the news to the world?

I’m sure his sister and nieces and nephews in Argentina was contacted by either the Vatican or by the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires before the news broke…

He is the first pope since John Paul I who dies with closely related family members living… Neither John Paul II or Benedict XVI had any siblings alive when they passed, or any nieces or nephews…

Yes, there has been mention of leading candidates to succeed Pope Francis. I hope the conclave chooses someone under 70, who will be able to have an impact.
Most of the cardinals who are eligible to vote were appointed by Pope Francis, so logic dictates that a "continuity candidate" should be elected.

Nevertheless, papal conclaves sometimes yield surprising results.

The DM has good information on what happens next

The next pope could well be Asian or African, we've had south america and 2x Europe before.
The last sitting pope died in 2005, a long time ago. I dont count Benedikt, who was retired before.

I think they are wrong about the lying in State as Pope Franziskus has made some changes. And apparently he will lying in a coffin and not on a catafalk

Pope Francis was from Argentina, but his father was Italian and his mother was born to Italian parents, so he was also "European" to a certain extent. Argentina itself is a majoritarily white country.

Pope Francis, however, did appoint a large number of non-European cardinals, which made the College of Cardinals less eurocentric and increases the chance of a Pope from other continents.

It is not a given though. I suppose the position of the prospective candidates on key issues matters more than geography.

Felipe VI, as King of Spain, is ex officio the honorary protocanon of the chapter of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where I believe Pope Francis chose to be buried.

As the dead pope has announced that his funeral should be less traditional and with less pomp, do you think that a huge turnoil of royals and heads of states will be invited to take part?

We will have to wait and see. But I suspect it is possible to combine the two in many ways - Heads of State and royals representing their people and paying respect to the office and Church and yet also elements without pomp and tradition for the individual.

As he will not be buried at St Peter i wonder if the funeral Mass will still be there or if it will be at St. Maria Maggiore where he wanted to be buried. I guess Mass at St. Peters and afterwards burial at St. Maria Maggiore

Saw this news as I wait to head off on a vacation with little internet service for two weeks. I was shocked.

RIP to an amazing inspiration to all Catholics, and many others. He was a truly incredible man.

I remember when he was named Pope. The first Jesuit, the first born in the New world, and first non European since the 8th century. He definitely set a new standard as Pope with his way of looking at the role of the church. I am not surprised even in burrial and funeral, he continues to do so.

May Pope Francis rest in peace. He will be missed.
Already yesterday, I found his presence on Easter day extremely poignant, and now even more so. It very much sounded as a final goodbye, even though I didn't expect he would pass away less than 24 hours later.
He died during the Jubilee year, on Easter Monday and on the day of the mythological founding of Rome (21 April 753, B.C.).

I guess we will find out tomorrow when the vatican press office will communicate the instructions for the lying in state wich will likely begin on Wednesday…

The italian and argentinian presidents are probably given for natural reasons… Don’t know about the others but i would not be surprised if at least the catholic heads of state will attend…
