The Second Reading of the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill took place on October 15.

I must say I have to agree that certain members' criticisms of the bill are lacking in sincerity.

It is possibly of particular interest to members of this forum that the Government offered two justifications for why they continue to support hereditary monarchy even though they oppose hereditary House of Lords membership:

1. No monarch since Queen Anne has withheld Royal Assent from a bill.
2. The constitutional monarchy enjoys popular support.

(If it were me, I would have added that succession to the throne does not exclude women from the office in the way succession to most peerages does, but that is apparently not important to the Government.)

You will be happy to know that last year the earl and his wife have reconciled and have not proceeded with the divorce.

Thanks to the post above I came across this interview with the Countess of Devon; it must have been quite a change from living in California with her husband for 10 years to suddenly be living in a castle in the South West of England and finding your way as 'the countess'.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I'm doing research on Peerage in the UK. I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with current day Lords and Ladies in and around Hertfordshire or Manchester? Who would be the most well known in the area? Thanks!

The Earls of Derby, although more closely associated with Liverpool and Cheshire, have historically owned a lot of land in parts of Manchester. There are the Earls of Warrington/Stamford, who used to live at Dunham Massey, south of Manchester. The Egertons have various branches, associated with Heaton Park, Tatton Park and Worsley Old Hall. The de Traffords are baronets rather than lords, but a famous name in the area.

The Dukes of Manchester have nothing to do with Manchester, though 🙄.

Thank you for that information : )

Would you happen to know of a Lady Melody or a Lady Charlotte (they are sisters) who are active in and around Manchester and Hertfordshire? I thought that their last name was Churchill, but I'm not certain on that.

No, that doesn't ring any bells, sorry. There aren't any Churchills by those names.

Okay, thank you for the input. Like I said, I'm not completely sure of their last name. May I ask, are you pretty familiar with most Peerage in the UK? If I was to show you a photo of them, would you possibly be able to recognize them?

A young British Aristocrat died!
Selina Violet Douglas-Home, who died 24 January, 2025, aged 19, was a scion of the Earls of Home.

She was born 1 February, 2005, the only daughter of Tara John Douglas-Home (born 8 Apr, 1969), and his wife the former Francina Aurelia Beelaerts van Blokland (born 13 May, 1972), and a granddaughter of Charles Cospatrick Douglas-Home (1937-85), sometime editor of The Times newspaper, by his wife Jessica Violet Gwynne (born 7 Feb, 1944).

Selina was a great-granddaughter of the Hon Henry Montagu Douglas-Home (1907-1980), and his wife the Lady Alexandra Margaret Elizabeth Spencer (1906-96), daughter of the 6th Earl Spencer, KG, GCVO, VD, PC (1857-1922).

Selina's great-grandfather was a younger brother of the 14th Earl of Home, KT (1903-1995), later Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Prime Minister 1963-64, and afterwards Baron Home of the Hirsel, life peer.

And they are due in summer.

Congratulations!

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are expecting their first child!
Tatler seems to have Inside Information as they already write about an Heir. So far only a boy will be a Heir to his fathers Titles.

Interesting indeed, though the announcement itself doesn't specify the gender. A daughter could still be heiress to the Westminster estates and fortune, though not the title itself.

I'm sure they'd have some way of allowing Charlotte's spouse to use her title, not sure what.

That would open a can of worms as then surely the rest of the peerage would want the same?

I agree it should be possible, but I am not sure it is without reforms to the peerage and the way their titles work.

The issue of sexism and heterosexism in consort titulature has already been raised in Parliament and in the media.

Last month [December 2010] Buckingham Palace signed a warrant declaring that every justice of the supreme court of the UK will in future be given the address [of Lord or Lady].

Critics are furious at the move, which they say discriminates against the husbands and possible civil partners of judges. While male justices will become lord and be able to confer titles on their wives, civil partners or the husbands of female justices will not have the same right.

[...] But the supreme court and Buckingham Palace defended the decision, stating that the use of courtesy titles would reduce confusion and that the different rules for men and women were a matter of convention, decided upon after constitutional advice from ministers.

27 June 2016

The Government recognises that there are some intrinsic inequalities within the courtesy titles system as it relates to honorifics. We have sympathy with those who are seeking to resolve such inequalities and we are looking into the process around courtesy titles, including in relation to same sex spouses and civil partners. The resolution of these inequalities is a very complex issue and we are at an early stage. We will provide an update in due course.
