Swedish State Visits: General Discussion and Suggestions & Musings

That could be possible. But I guess President Tómasdóttir will make state visits to Denmark and Norway first, as custom for an Icelandic President. It might very well be King Frederik's first incoming state visit.
Yes i also think that will be King Frederiks first incoming state visit this autumn.

Sweden is more likely for sometime 2025… I also think a Belgian state visit to Sweden may be in the cards for 2025.

Hard to tell where the next outgoing state visit may go… Chile maybe… The chilean president Gabriel Boric was recently here on a political visit, and it is Swedens turn to pay a state visit.

The King and Queen are soon embarking on their second outgoing and fifth state visit in total, for 2024. A remarkable pace for a couple in close to 80, and I guess they will not slow down the coming years.

The Government's Export and Trade Strategy suggest that countries in Asia and Oceania are of extra importance or potential for Sweden. Already next week we see the state visit to Singapore, one of the highlighted countries. Japan, Republic of Korea, Vietnam, and New Zealand are deemed as important due to the Free trade agreement with EU but also countries where these negotiations are ongoing, such as Australia, India and Indonesia.

In recent years state visits to and/or from Korea, India and Indonesia has already taken place. Perhaps Australia and New Zealand are seen as more important together with a visit of the new Emperor of Japan, with the last incoming state visit in 2000.

However, the political and security situation in Europe is strained, and many of Sweden’s closest allies and tradig partners are in Europe.

A state visit to Spain wouldn't be unlikely to reciprocate the 2021 state visit and the last state visit to Spain taking place in 1979.

Poland is one of the closest allies, also given its location across the Baltic Sea, and the last incoming state visit was in the 1990's. However, with a Presidential Election in Poland next year it migh be doubtful.

Iceland's new President will for sure visit Sweden soon. I assume a visit to Norway in the spring will be followed by a visit to Sweden. Maybe already before summer or during the fall.

We're all waiting for a UK-Swedish state visit. Many things speak in favor of this. UK is an important trade and export partner for Sweden and there are reasons to strengthen the relations after Sweden joining Nato. On top of that the last visits took place in the 70's and 80's.

In short, possible state visits in 2025:
- Japan (outgoing or incoming)
- Poland (incoming)
- Iceland (incoming)
- UK (outgoing or incoming)
- Spain (outgoing)
- Belgium (incoming)
- Australia (outgoing)
- New Zealand (outgoing)

June 11, 1956 - Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh made their first state visit to Sweden.

I would add Luxembourg (outgoing), either before or after the accession

That looks like a very ambitious list. Maybe we should narrow it down to a more realistic shortlist.

Australia and New Zealand are somewhat unlikely in my opinion as state visits. An official visit may be in the cards though.

I think the Swedes would be interested in an incoming or outgoing British state visit, but that will depend on the interest of the British government too, and I suppose British priorities right now lie elsewhere, especially a planned state visit to the USA and a royal tour of Canada. And the British King already has an outgoing European state visit to Italy planned for 2025, so if there is any chance of a Swedish state visit, it would probably be from Sweden to the UK, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Incoming visits from Iceland, Poland or Belgium are possible, and perhaps an outgoing state visit to Japan, but I wouldn't bet on Spain either.

A full state visit to Australia was made in 2005, and The Crown Princess Couple made an official visit in 2023 so it’s definitely not impossible… Though those visits has to my knowledge never been returned…

A full state visit to Canada was made in 2006, and it was returned in 2017.

A swedish state visit to New Zealand (or in the opposite direction) has to my knowledge never taken place… The Crown Princess Couple made an official visit in 2023.

Poland has a presidential election this year, and Luxembourg will get a new Grand Duke so a state visit in either directions for 2025 can likely be ruled out…

Sweden likely has an incoming state visit from Iceland this year…

If there will be more icoming state visits for 2025, i somehow feel that the baltic region (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) is a high priority for Sweden right now…

A new president of Finland is usually also honoured with an outgoing swedish state visit to Finland soon after he has visited Sweden…. Not sure if it will be already this year though..

The only ”monarchy-to-monarchy” state visit i can see being in the cards at the moment is an incoming state visit from Belgium.

I don't see Sweden as an immediate priority for a state visit from a UK perspective, but prhaps there will be a state visit, either way, sometime in the next 5 years.

The countries should be seen as possile state visits this year, but it could of course be next year, in two years or never. I highlighted countries that could be of intererest for Sweden due to political, trading or historical reasons.

The Swedish Government has stated the Baltic region and countries in Asia Pasific of extra interest and importance from a trading and political perspective. That said, I think Sweden sees UK as an more important state visit than the other way around.

Most likely we will see the normal three or four state visits this year. Seems to be an incoming state visit (from a Republic) in early May from what I have heard.

The State Apartments and the Great Guest Apartment at the Royal Palace will be closed from 24 April. It seems that the talk of an incoming state visit in early May is true.

Indeed, it seems to be a state visit beginning on 6 May, as the entire Royal Palace is closed this day. Most parts of the Royal Palace will be closed both prior and after the 6th.

Place your bets for visiting country. Only I have heard is that it's not a monarchy visiting.

As the icelandic president is the only of the 3 new nordic heads of state to not have paid a state visit to Sweden, i think Iceland is very likely…

And Iceland it was 🇮🇸🇸🇪

Its the 50th Anniversary of the Swedish State Visit to Denmark in April ,1975!
Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik hosted King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, the king was not married at this stage.
Swedish State Visit to Denmark, 1975

That would be lovely!
Thy could do a Tour through all three scandinavian monarchies. Starting in Denmark, then Norway, with spending the weekend there as private guests of the norwegian RF and then going to Sweden for example.

Yes but i suspect the next uk-swedish state visit will be in the opposite direction as the last full state visit (in 1983) was by QEII to Sweden…

Same for Norway as QEII was there in 2001 and a full state visit has not been returned (albeit an official visit with a gala dinner took place in 2005)

For Denmark however it is UK’s turn to visit as QMII paid a state visit to UK in 2000 and that visit has not been returned since

The Crown Princess Couple conducts official visits to Japan and Republic of Korea in October.
On October 9–11, the Crown Princess will visit the World Expo in Osaka. The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel will then travel to Tokyo, among other places, on October 11–15.
The Crown Princess Couple will later travel on to the Republic of Korea on October 15–17.

2026 will be another busy and hectic year for the King and Queen, so let's see how much space there will be in the agenda for state visits. The King's 80th birthday on April 30th will for sure be celebrated in great style. Also the King and Queen's Golden Wedding in June will be celebrated, at least with a large private dinner (from what I have heard).

In September there is a general election to the parliament (the Riksdag), regions and municipalities. Even though the King and the Royal Family obviously are not taking part in this, it means the political community in Sweden will be occupied campaigning before the election. Given the election result it could take time until a new government is in place. When a new government has taken office the King and Queen will host a concert and dinner (riksdagssupé) for all MP's, government and senior government officials at the Royal Palace. This event is the largest occuring event at the Royal Palace.

With all these extraordinary events happening in 2026, I think it's likely we'll see less (incoming) state visits. The 80th birthday and Golden Wedding celebrations, and the Riksdag dinner will of course have a big impact on the costs and budget as well, making additional incoming state visits less likely.

However, a year without state visits at all won't happen either. So, for the coming years this would be countries of interest:

2026/2027:
- Poland, incoming
Given the current security situation in Europe, countries around the Baltic Sea are in focus. The King paid a state visit to Poland in 2011. The last visit to Sweden was in 1995.

- Latvia or Lithuania, incoming
Latvia and Lithuania are neighbors across the Baltics, like Poland, and are important from a security point of view. The King and Queen paid a state visit to Estonia in 2023, Lithuania in 2015, and Latvia in 2014. As Estonia made a state visit to Sweden in 2011, I think Latvia or Lithuania could be in the cards instead.

- Spain, outgoing
At least rumors in Spain suggests a Swedish state visit to Spain next year. It would also be about time as the last state visit to Spain took place in 1983, and it would return the visit to Sweden in 2021.

2027:
- Finland, outgoing
The King and Queen are likely to pay a state visit to Finland in 2027, and return the 2024 visit to President Stubb. A return visit usually takes place in the third year of a Finnish president.

- Denmark, outgoing
A return visit to King Frederik and Queen Mary soon, would strengthen the already good relations. A state visit in 2027 would also mark 20 years since the last state visit to Denmark.

Yes it remains to be seen how much time there will be for state visits… However this year the state visits was also kept down to a minimum and they can’t do it that way forever… I expect at least one incoming and one outgoing during the first part of the year…

Autumn more unpredictable as like stated above we have parliamentary election in September with the possibility of a new incoming government who may have different priorities…

As the King’s and Queen’s Golden Wedding Anniversary falls on Midsummer Eve i doubt there will be much or any public celebrations about that as most swedes will be away either on holiday or off duty on private celebrations… There is ofcourse also the possibility of a celebration being moved to another date than 19:th June…

What I have heard is that the dinner will take place earlier in June, but let's see.

I guess it could be something in style with the Queen's 80th birthday dinner.

Good news and not too far to travel.
Its shaping up to be a rather busy Spring for the King and Queen!

Poland it is! Not a surprise, even though I thought it would have been an incoming visit. Looking forward to a full three day visit!

It will be interesting to see if there will be one more state visit before the general election takes place in September….
