Swedish State Visits: General Discussion and Suggestions & Musings

That could be possible. But I guess President Tómasdóttir will make state visits to Denmark and Norway first, as custom for an Icelandic President. It might very well be King Frederik's first incoming state visit.
Yes i also think that will be King Frederiks first incoming state visit this autumn.

Sweden is more likely for sometime 2025… I also think a Belgian state visit to Sweden may be in the cards for 2025.

Hard to tell where the next outgoing state visit may go… Chile maybe… The chilean president Gabriel Boric was recently here on a political visit, and it is Swedens turn to pay a state visit.

The King and Queen are soon embarking on their second outgoing and fifth state visit in total, for 2024. A remarkable pace for a couple in close to 80, and I guess they will not slow down the coming years.

The Government's Export and Trade Strategy suggest that countries in Asia and Oceania are of extra importance or potential for Sweden. Already next week we see the state visit to Singapore, one of the highlighted countries. Japan, Republic of Korea, Vietnam, and New Zealand are deemed as important due to the Free trade agreement with EU but also countries where these negotiations are ongoing, such as Australia, India and Indonesia.

In recent years state visits to and/or from Korea, India and Indonesia has already taken place. Perhaps Australia and New Zealand are seen as more important together with a visit of the new Emperor of Japan, with the last incoming state visit in 2000.

However, the political and security situation in Europe is strained, and many of Sweden’s closest allies and tradig partners are in Europe.

A state visit to Spain wouldn't be unlikely to reciprocate the 2021 state visit and the last state visit to Spain taking place in 1979.

Poland is one of the closest allies, also given its location across the Baltic Sea, and the last incoming state visit was in the 1990's. However, with a Presidential Election in Poland next year it migh be doubtful.

Iceland's new President will for sure visit Sweden soon. I assume a visit to Norway in the spring will be followed by a visit to Sweden. Maybe already before summer or during the fall.

We're all waiting for a UK-Swedish state visit. Many things speak in favor of this. UK is an important trade and export partner for Sweden and there are reasons to strengthen the relations after Sweden joining Nato. On top of that the last visits took place in the 70's and 80's.

In short, possible state visits in 2025:
- Japan (outgoing or incoming)
- Poland (incoming)
- Iceland (incoming)
- UK (outgoing or incoming)
- Spain (outgoing)
- Belgium (incoming)
- Australia (outgoing)
- New Zealand (outgoing)

June 11, 1956 - Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh made their first state visit to Sweden.

In short, possible state visits in 2025:
- Japan (outgoing or incoming)
- Poland (incoming)
- Iceland (incoming)
- UK (outgoing or incoming)
- Spain (outgoing)
- Belgium (incoming)
- Australia (outgoing)
- New Zealand (outgoing)
I would add Luxembourg (outgoing), either before or after the accession

That looks like a very ambitious list. Maybe we should narrow it down to a more realistic shortlist.

Australia and New Zealand are somewhat unlikely in my opinion as state visits. An official visit may be in the cards though.

I think the Swedes would be interested in an incoming or outgoing British state visit, but that will depend on the interest of the British government too, and I suppose British priorities right now lie elsewhere, especially a planned state visit to the USA and a royal tour of Canada. And the British King already has an outgoing European state visit to Italy planned for 2025, so if there is any chance of a Swedish state visit, it would probably be from Sweden to the UK, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Incoming visits from Iceland, Poland or Belgium are possible, and perhaps an outgoing state visit to Japan, but I wouldn't bet on Spain either.

A full state visit to Australia was made in 2005, and The Crown Princess Couple made an official visit in 2023 so it’s definitely not impossible… Though those visits has to my knowledge never been returned…

A full state visit to Canada was made in 2006, and it was returned in 2017.

A swedish state visit to New Zealand (or in the opposite direction) has to my knowledge never taken place… The Crown Princess Couple made an official visit in 2023.

Poland has a presidential election this year, and Luxembourg will get a new Grand Duke so a state visit in either directions for 2025 can likely be ruled out…

Sweden likely has an incoming state visit from Iceland this year…

If there will be more icoming state visits for 2025, i somehow feel that the baltic region (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) is a high priority for Sweden right now…

A new president of Finland is usually also honoured with an outgoing swedish state visit to Finland soon after he has visited Sweden…. Not sure if it will be already this year though..

The only ”monarchy-to-monarchy” state visit i can see being in the cards at the moment is an incoming state visit from Belgium.

I don't see Sweden as an immediate priority for a state visit from a UK perspective, but prhaps there will be a state visit, either way, sometime in the next 5 years.

The countries should be seen as possile state visits this year, but it could of course be next year, in two years or never. I highlighted countries that could be of intererest for Sweden due to political, trading or historical reasons.

The Swedish Government has stated the Baltic region and countries in Asia Pasific of extra interest and importance from a trading and political perspective. That said, I think Sweden sees UK as an more important state visit than the other way around.

Most likely we will see the normal three or four state visits this year. Seems to be an incoming state visit (from a Republic) in early May from what I have heard.
