Their Majesties The King and Queen will pay a State Visit to Canada on 18–20 November 2025 at the invitation of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.
Around 30 Swedish companies, government agencies and other organisations will be part of the Team Sweden delegation that Business Sweden is arranging on behalf of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. An extensive programme is planned for the delegation, including participation in the Sweden Canada Innovation Days conference, which aims to strengthen cooperation between Swedish and Canadian actors in defence and security, electrification and advanced technology.
Sweden and Canada will launch a strategic partnership during the State Visit. It will act as a political framework that aims to further deepen relations and strengthen our capacity to address joint challenges.
The three-day State Visit will take place in Ottawa and Montreal.

What a lovely surprise… I didn’t thought Canada was in the cards at the foreign ministry right now. Even though Sweden and Canada are indeed close when it comes to business and trade, so it shouldn’t have surprised me.

The state visit from Canada and the then Governor General David Johnston in 2017 was very successful…

It will be The King’s 3:rd outgoing state visit to Canada in his reign, the previous visits having taken place in 1988 and 2006… Lovely to see the close bond continue.

And Canada is of course also very interested in strengthening its bond with European countries.

Indeed a lovely surprise! I somewhat had given up on an outgoing state visit this year. Canada has been in my personal list of countries for state visits. The bonds are strong between the countries, and even more so after Sweden's entry to NATO.

JAS 39 Gripen to Canada? The King will help
Canada's largest newspaper The Globe and Mail reported last week that Saab and Canadian Bombardier are looking at joint production of Gripen planes in Canada. Saab and Bombardier already have a joint production of the GlobalEye system, a long-range surveillance aircraft.
"We confirm discussions with Saab about Gripen," said Mark Masluch, head of communications at Bombardier.
Now Sweden is launching a charm offensive to win the deal - and is sending the head of state. On November 18-20, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will travel to Canada, together with Minister for Energy and Industry Ebba Busch, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and about 30 Swedish companies.

Canada is indeed very interested in building the Gripen planes in Canada. We are looking to diversify our purchasing of military needs away from America and Sweden might be part of this trend. I wonder how long this visit was in the planning or if it is a relatively new idea.? I'm looking forward to this visit!!!

Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, can't host the state visit:
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, has been released from hospital and will continue her recovery in residence as she looks forward to resuming the full scope of her duties in due course.
The Governor General is appreciative for the support of the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada and Deputy of the Governor General, who presided over the National Remembrance Day Ceremony and will represent her next week during the State visit of Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

The Government Offices of Sweden has finally published the program of the state visit to Canada, the Royal Court has still not done so.

Program in Swedish:

On behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada and Deputy of the Governor General, will participate in several events on November 18 and 19, as part of the State visit of Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
The Chief Justice will be joined by his spouse, the Honourable Catherine Mandeville, Justice of the Superior Court of Québec, and by Governor General Simon’s spouse, His Excellency Whit Fraser.

From the gala dinner

The Royal House updates photos here:

The King's speech at the gala dinner, he said among other things:
"Personally, I have a very special bond to Canada. My great grandfather, Prince Arthur of Connaught, was Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916, and lived here at Rideau Hall. It always feels very special to be here."

Short video of the first events:

Next to the (not that young; 60) prime minister, the royal couple starts to show their age (79 & 81). Especially the queen who of course is also 2 1/2 years older than her husband.

The King and Queen looks very tired…

I guess they arrived with an overnight flight from Brazil (wich is an ordeal in itself for most people in their age)

I have been watching coverage of the visit on Canadian TV, and it irks me that everyone keeps referring to a visit by 'the Swedish royal family'. It's not the whole Bernadotte clan, and nobody would say 'the British royal family' for a visit by Charles and Camilla, so why can't they say 'the Swedish King and Queen'?

The first day of the state visit to Canada concluded with a state banquet in honor of the King and Queen of Sweden.

King Carl Gustaf spoke this morning at the Sweden Canada Innovation Days at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. The event aims to strengthen commercial relations and promote cooperation in innovation, trade and investment, including in the green and digital transition. This year's edition is the fifth in a row, with the theme of defense and security, electrification and advanced technology. Sweden Canada Innovation Days is organized by Business Sweden, Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency.

The visit was obviously arranged as a way to strengthen strategic and diplomatic ties between our two nations, and I could not be happier. Sweden is exactly the kind of country we should be building stronger friendships with, and I'm absolutely here for it 🇨🇦 🇸🇪 🇨🇦 🇸🇪

Can you be more specific? Who is using this language? Some news outlets are staffed by people who know nothing about other countries, but I would expect more of a national broadcaster.

I heard this from various people on both CBC News and CTV News, both of whom I would think know better than to be so imprecise.

Yes, and there are many news articles about the state visit starting with "The Swedish Royal family..."

"As Their Majesties conclude their visit to Ottawa, we celebrate the strong and growing ties between our two countries.
Together, Canada and Sweden are deepening collaboration as economic and security partners—advancing shared priorities and continued cooperation among northern nations."
