Spain State Visits/Official Visits: General Discussion

I hope Felipe and Letizia will pay a state visit to Luxembourg before Grand Duke Henri abdicates.

So far this we haven't had any incoming State Visits ,this is very unusual unless they have been planned for Autumn/Winter 2024?
Normally its 2 incoming and 2 outgoing!

State Visits are a decision of the government, and this government does not always follow established customs. In the first half of the year there have been three important regional elections (Galicia, the Basque Country and Catalonia) and the European elections, so they have been more concerned about continually being on an electoral campaign.

Hopefully we will at least see one incoming State Visit for the end of 2024.

The swedish and norwegian state visits to Jordan just a few years ago did not even have black tie dinners - so i would not hold my breath for tiaras
Indeed. But then we surprisingly got tiaras and white tie at the Dinner at the Crown Princely Wedding last year.

My guess too. No tiaras. But they did surprise us in Jordan with a white tie and tiaras for the wedding. So maybe they now will do tiaras for the spanish visit. But to be honest, I guess not. Queen Letizia is probably happy to not wear jewellery anyways.

I am happy with the announcement of this state visit. After having made state visits to the United Kingdom, Japan, Morocco, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands, now it is time to make a state visit to Jordan.
State visits from European monarchies still need to be made to Norway, Belgium and Luxembourg.

I was thinking the same thing!

I always loved that Queen Sofia wore the sash and star of the (dynastic) Order of Saints Olga and Sophia given to her by her father, rather than the (republican) Order of the Redeemer, which she was presumably awarded by the President. The same was done by Queen Margrethe II in 2009 during the Greek president's State Visit to Denmark.

And it was the only time she wore the fleur de lys tiara at the State Banquet for a President. It was worn only for another President in June 2014 shortly before the abdication of her husband.

According to the digital newspaper The Diplomat in Spain, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are expected to make a state visit to Italy in December.
Felipe and Letizia will be received by President Mattarella in Rome. They will also travel to Naples.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will make a state visit to the Republic of China, scheduled for the second half of 2025, according to Cámara Real, a Telemadrid programme dedicated to the Spanish Royal Family. The state visit is expected to take place in November.

Yes but what is wrong/different? We've had times without a government but everything seems to be functioning?

There is no official explanation, but some media have already published several articles about the scandal of the absence of State Visits to Spain for more than a year.

Lately, the problems between the Royal House and the government in foreign affairs have increased. There are no state visits to Spain, the King and Queen have fewer events abroad and on occasions the government has not sent any minister to accompany the King, as it should be. There is a well-founded suspicion that neither the President nor the Minister of Foreign Affairs like to play second fiddle to the King... and State Visits are the event where the Monarchy shines the most.

Sánchez has monopolised Spanish representation abroad from the start, but the greater his problems in Spain are, the more he travels abroad... and lately he has had many scandals, so he likes to "play" at being an international leader.

The current Minister of Foreign Affairs is causing many scandals in his ministry, there is even a section of the press that calls him "little Napoleon", he appoints ambassadors in a totally arbitrary manner, disregarding experience, he expels ambassadors from their posts before their time for absurd reasons... and he does not forgive the fact that the new Head of the Royal Household is an ambassador whom he removed and he has attacked the Royal House for errors that were his ministry's responsibility.

After the absence at Notre Dame and the pathetic mess created by the minister, the press stopped keeping quiet and now they point out these gestures more... so it seems that the foreign agenda of the Royal House is livening up a bit.

The embarrassing mess surrounding Notre Dame was down right incompetence by the Spanish Foreign Ministry and the less said about Sánchez the better after what he allowed the king and queen to walk into in Valencia.

Hopefully now the President of Egypt has had an Official Visit we will start to see incoming State Visits resume.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía made 2 state visits to Norway, the first in 1982 and the second in 2006.

Hopefully, Felipe VI and Letizia will soon also make a state visit to Norway.
