Hello, i have a question about these lady's who get these (title ) at the court. I am very busy with the Dynasty of the Romanov's and you have a wikipedia website (in English and Russian ) List of State Ladies of Imperial Russia - Wikipedia
i ask my self what is de differents between the two ? because with some perseon's there stand that she is Maid of Honor but somewhere else she is Lady in Waiting..

Jan

According to the explanation on wikipedia itself - on the page of the maids of honor - the state ladies/ladies in waiting had a higher position than the maids of honor at court. So, the ladies in waiting ate the senior attendants to the queen and the maids of honor the more junior attendants. So, in time of course it is possible that some who starts as maid of honor is later appointed as lady in waiting.

If you look for the descriptions with the two links ad then it's for me not sure when use when.

The title was given to unmarried women When appointed as a maid of honor, a girl received a " cipher ", that is, a monogram decorated with diamonds of the royal personage whose retinue she entered. When they got married, this title was removed from them, but they retained the right to be presented to the empress and receive invitations to court ceremonies and balls in the Great Hall of the Winter Palace together with their husbands, regardless of their rank

Maid of honor was the most frequently granted title (1881: 189 maids of honor out of 203 court ladies with titles; 1914: 261 out of 280). Only unmarried women could be ladies-in-waiting and chambermaids. Only a few of them were given a higher title upon marriage; the rest were expelled from the court upon marriage. In 1826, Nicholas I established a set of maids of honor - 36 people. Some of the "complete" maids of honor were appointed to "serve" the empresses, grand duchesses and grand princesses (these maids of honor were called retinue ). Educators of the grand duchesses were appointed from the retinue of maids of honor.

It were two distinct functions, so it depended on whether they had been appointed one or the other.
