Royal Ascot 3: 2019 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Really nice to see some of the Al Sauds are around and out and about, they know horses so well. It's a lovely welcome to old friends staying in the area.

Prince of Wales at Royal Ascot today.

Personally i don’t get why the saudi-royals are given prominent seats in the carriages every year while most of the british junior royals don’t get to travel in a carriage…

Maybe it’s a sponsor thing and they have to do it like that, but i’m sure the public would rather see one of the junior windsors or even one of the equerries or queens companions than yet another saudi prince that noone has heard about…
Just because you have not heard of them. The Saudi princes are well known in the racing world, that possibly explains their place as a guest of the King.

Are you sure many divroced British women continue to be known as Mrs 'ex-husband's first name' 'ex-husband's last name'? I am aware of many keeping the last name but don't recall any example of women continuing the use of his first name as well. For example, Camilla remaining known as Mrs. Andrew Parker Bowles and Autumn still being addressed as Mrs. Peter Phillips.
The usual thing is to use their own first name but the ex's surname. Some women go back to their maiden name, but women with children often prefer to keep the same surname as the kids. It's very rare to use the ex's first name - unless you're Lady Colin Campbell and just want to keep the title!

I did say surname.

I did say surname.
My bad. However, you responded and seemed to disagree with a post stating that a divorced woman would typically no longer use her former husband's first name (but use her own) while keeping his last name. So, that created the confusion for me.

Does anyone have the full list? This list is only 7 and I know that the Chattos, the Gloucesters and Lady Gabriella were there so that is 12 but who were the other two?

Officially only the King and Queen attended (listed in the CC) but I like to add the rest to an 'unofficial' list.

I also have only Beatrice, Edo, Sophie, Anne, Peter, Zara and Mike on the first day (along with the King and Queen). Does anyone have any more?

A totally different event.

What should they do at the Garter if they don't have it.

The link also states that Peter Philips and his girlfriend Harriet attended.

Ladies day always draws a big attendance - as do Day 1 & 2. Normally attendance is low for Day 4 and even lower for Day 5. I expect to see Princess Eugenie one day as I don't think she has attended yet

We’ve got 13 (plus a girlfriend) members on the first day, 14 on second and 12 (plus 2 girlfriends) on the third. And yes Eugenie & Jack are expected to attend tomorrow and they have not attended this year yet. We got 16 members on Day 2 last year, so this year is a bit lower.

The King never misses an Event .Is it also so hot at Ascot ?
Yes, it’s hot. Especially if you’re accustomed to the cold and must also take into account that the gentlemen's clothing makes all difficult, especially for them.

Peter Phillips with girlfriend Harriet Sperling, today at Ascot.

Yes, it is indeed hot at Royal Ascot - and it is getting hotter tomorrow (Friday) and hotter still on Saturday.

I have known some very cold Royal Ascots over the years; this year is not one of them!

I've had a quick look through the thread and to answer some of the questions:

Badges: The geometrical octagonal badges are issued to those in the Royal Enclosure: the badges have your name on and are handwritten. When they introduced machine-printed badges one year, there were masses of complaints and so handwritten badges returned again the following year.

Ascot badges take several forms: those who are invited to the Royal Box have a special badge - the badge is oval in shape and this year's badge is red/white/blue stripes.

I remain puzzled as to why Carol Middleton had an 'ordinary' royal enclosure badge [see below] She was in the royal box.

'Ordinary' mortals [with the right to attend the Royal Enclosure] can apply for either:

A five day badge. This allows admittance on all days of Royal Ascot and it changes each year. This year the 2025 'Five Day Badge' is be Green.

A three day badge, valid for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Royal Ascot. The colour changes each year, so there is no chance of using last year's badge again. This year's colour is pale yellow

A 'Day Badge' The colour changes each day - i.e. Tuesday's badge will be different from the colour of Wednesday' badge, which in turn will be different from Thursday's badge and so on. This year's daily badge colours are:-
Tuesday - purple
Wednesday - pale pink
Thursday - Navy Blue
Friday - Fuchsia Pink
Saturday - Pale Blue

As well as the royal enclosure badges you saw, Ascot also issues a smaller round badge which permits entry into the so-called 'parade ring' in the centre of the paddock. Look closely and you will see that this smaller 'parade ring' badge follows the 'colour code' I have just mentioned above. i.e. if you are allowed into the parade ring for all 5 days, your parade ring badge will be the same colour as your royal enclosure badge. For example, this year my parade ring badge is green [all 5 days] and matches my Royal Enclosure badge.

Those who pay for Boxes or are invited into the Ascot Authority's [the organisation that runs Ascot] box have a triangular Badge. This changes colour each day.

The 'best' [quality-wise] racing is the Tuesday. Contrary to what a forum member said above, Friday nowadays is a very busy day - that is the end of the week. Traditionally it was a quiet day.

The confusion regarding Kate was some presumably sort of a cock-up. We were issued with a carriage list at midday showing William and Kate attending and travelling in the second carriage. This was then whisked away from us and a revised list was issued showing no Kate. William was shown as listed in the first carriage. The 'Information Ladies' quite openly said that Kate was unwell.

Subsequently the Palace has stated that Kate's absence was due to her phased return to royal duties.

I can well appreciate that Kate needs time to recover so my take on the situation for what it is worth is that Kate was certainly due to attend but pulled out at practically the last moment because of the intense heat. This is entirely understandable and I applaud her self-care. Kate's team should have anticipated this and should have said much earlier that the Princess of Wales would only be attending if she felt able to do so.

William was clearly pre-occupied because when he presented the trophy for the Prince of Wales's stakes, he dropped it.

In other news, the 'hot' trainer this week is the joint paring of father-and-son John and Thady Gosden. The pairing trained Charles and Camilla's horse yesterday but they were not successful. John and Thady trained the winner of today's Gold Cup. Charles and Camilla presented the winning trainer trophy to John and Thady and it must have been very tempting for the King to day 'you two have trained a good few winners this week - why could you not have managed to win for us yesterday? [Joke]

Hope some of this is of interest. I will report further tomorrow.
