In 1936, a year before Sonja was born, her parents lost a son. Karl, Queen Sonja's older brother, was only seven years old.
Karl Herman Haraldsen was taking a boat trip with his father, Karl August, and some family friends. The boat ended up exploding due to a thermal failure.
Karl Herman Haraldsen was never found and was presumed dead after the tragedy.
Queen Sonja's sister Gry committed suicide in 1970.
In 2016, the Queen lost her brother Haakon Haraldsen, who was 95 years old and was the eldest of her four siblings. Of the four siblings, only Queen Sonja is alive.
