Queen Mary of Denmark Jewels 2: March 2025 -

The Dutch tiara is fab with big diamonds. The Danish one is made with old rose cut diamonds, the glitter must certainly not be the same.

I’m still not completely persuaded that this necklace works as a tiara… But Mary doesn’t have a lot to choose from if she wants to wear an all diamond tiara as QMII has clearly been allowed to retain the Floral Aigrette…

It is either this one or the wedding tiara.

I think the stud portion of the earrings is very large, if a slightly smaller pair of diamonds was used for the stud, the earrings (stud and pendant) would perhaps be a more cohesive design.

Agreed. But small changes to the new bandeau can lead to a much better overall design, IMO.

I still don't understand why the floral aigrette can not be shared by the 2 woman. Why can't Queen Mary not wear it if Queen Margrethe wears one of her others

I agree but Denmark seems to like to adhere to ”what’s yours is yours and what’s mine is mine”.

QMII once owned the Floral Aigrette privately but obviously choosed to put it into the entailed foundation… Wich doesn’t make sense to me if it was not meant to be passed on anyway…

Maybe it is time, in the new reign, to change the policy. Maybe they could share the jewellery of the entailed foundation more. And the crown jewellery should be able to be taken abroad, because why not.

I agree about the sharing of the foundation Jewels.
I guess a reason that the Crown Jewels are not taken abroad is also that they don't want to have empty display cases at Rosenborg for several days, which would be the case then. If they are worn in Denmark it usually means in Copenhagen so they can be taken out the days they are used and put in in one the next day.

That close up just shows IMO that the diamonds are (can’t believe I’m saying it)too big. They are all too similar in size. A frame that goes up in the centre like the Dutch would help but I also think they would be better to remove the diamonds that are similar size on either side to give it more a focus and balance. But its good to see them taking something that might not be used that much and give it new life.

Daisy could have left the aigrette to the foundation on the condition that she had the use of it for life. Alternatively it isn't part of the foundation until after her death.

The earrings are a knockout and balance well with this tiara. Love it!
The earrings are amazing and part of the brilliant set of the Crown jewels.

I love the tiara. I love that Queen Mary does not feel the need to always plop the biggest tiara on her head regardless of how it looks or fits. She is strategic in how she chooses the jewels she wears. Bigger is not always better. I find it amusing that for some the tiara is not big enough but at the same time the diamonds are too big.

Not sure what is wrong with a few empty cases at Rosenberg for a few days. After all, the jewels are for use by the Queen of the day, and surely that takes precedence over the public missing some jewels on occasion. I presume that is the basis they are made available to the public, ie, when not in use by HM.

I suspect the restriction on not taking the crown jewels abroad dates back to earlier times when it was considered dangerous or less safe to do so.

When QMII is there , she prefers to wear jewel she never worn. but she should wear her Elefant Collar on a perfect way..

I agree. What is the point if they never can wear these jewels. There are very few events. So if a lot of the jewellery are gone for some days, do a discounted price for that day or close the vault. I can not see the problem.

Personally i see no point in dropping the long accepted tradition of not taking the crown jewels abroad… It’s not like Queen Mary is lacking big gala jewellery, like the Belgian Queen does for example…. With 2 big parures available plus lots of grand smaller jewellery (wich she often chooses anyway) and the state banquets becoming fewer and fewer, there is no need to take the emerald parure or the crown diamonds abroad…

I think it’s nice that some things are reserved for some people and specific occassions…

I agree and especially as its outgunned by the showstopper earrings ,the Rosecut Diamond Tiara would be more suited to a lesser event and not the New Years Gala.
I suspect the choice of tiara was based on using something from Rosenberg, as it is an event in Denmark. And as she wore the emeralds last time, she chose the bandeau this time. Query if we might even see the two tiaras alternate for the New Year gala?

An exquisite choice of earrings which doesn’t detract from the orders but enhances the look.

I hope the Khedive of Egypt tiara returns to the main line. It's a very important tiara.

I sincerely doubt it will, and wasn't it Crown Princess Maragaret of Sweden's anyway? So it was only in the Danish vaults during Queen Ingrid's lifetime. As pretty as it is, it's not really a cultural loss for the Danish crown.

I can't see the Khedieve return to Denmark. It was bequeathed to Anne_Marie, who owns it in her personal capacity. How she disposes off her jewellery is her choice. Whilst her sons have all married very well, I do not know how well off the 2 daughters are. Any which way, and despite all the support received from the DRF in all these years of exile, I can't see A-M bequeath the Khevieve tiara back to the Danish main line.

I’m still not completely sold on the idea of using that diamond necklace as a tiara… It is not as successful imo as the similar dutch one wich has probably served as an inspiration for this one…

Though i understand Mary too… As the Floral Aigrette seems to still be with QMII after all, this one and the wedding tiara are her only all diamond options…

But i had hoped that she would alternate between the Emerald Tiara, the Pearl Poire Tiara, and the Ruby Tiara for the new years day banquet’s.

I have said this before, but I do think the Danish diamond bandeau can be improved considerably by a relatively minor alteration. All they need to do is lift either just the central stone or the three central stones by a smidgen, to provide a visual focal point. This lift has been incorporated into the design of the Dutch bandeau as well.

Mary is a tinkerer, given the number of alterations the ruby tiara has had. I have no doubt that, in time, she will adjust the diamond bandeau as well.

The difference is that the Danish bandeau is still an intact necklace/belt and the collets are attached to one another, thus limiting how much they can move around to create a focal point.
The Dutch bandeau, on the other hand, is no longer a convertible piece. Don't know if the stones have been reset, but it's evident in photos that the links connecting the diamonds are no longer there. This has allowed the jeweler who created the bandeau to arrange so that they follow the shape of the head more naturally.
